Autosport Show and helmets

Needing a new helmet for the 2010 regs (and Im sure Im not alone in this) I was thinking of attending the Autosport show on the last day to see if I could pick up a bargain. Anyone know if there are real discounts offered on the last day?

I can get a decent helmet (e.g. Bell) from the States for £250-300 plus £50 shipping, which here would cost circa £500.

Would I be better off putting the £60 cost of attending the show (entry fee and petrol) towards getting a helmet shipped over?

Advice, as always, much appreciated

Go to the show, its worth every penny. But still ship a helmet over, after you've double checked the size at the show. Best of both worlds really

I may be wrong here but hasn't the introduction of the new standard been delayed until October and there is no imperative to change straight away?

That may be for the international race helmets, but Im referring to the Sprint/National helmets, Snell SA2005 over BS 6685 type A

In addition to the shipping costs, you'll have import duty and VAT added to the cost of the US helmet.

As of now there are very few helmets that have passed 8860, so it won't be required even in FIA international events for awhile.

I bought my Peltor rally lid a number of years ago at the Autosport show.

General approach is:

Go and see Demon Tweeks to find the one that fits the best.
Decide on the one you want.
Find Peter Lloyd Rallying (or A. N. Other) to get the best price.
Buy from them - They'll mail your lid to you if they don't have the one you want at the show.

I saved about £100 IIRC, on a £350 lid.

I know that someone will be along shortly to whinge about using Demon Tweeks to simply try stuff on, but at the end of the day it is there choice whether they ultimately set their prices at a competetive level.

I bought a gp5k a couple of years ago from demon tweeks at the show. I got the vat off and a cara coat visor for half price. Gpr offered no discount at all.

The duty will be on the cost of shipping too.
approx 20% on top of total I would guess.

Gifts still attract import duty and VAT I believe.

I know that there is no VAT on a push bike helmet as it is classed as saftey equipment. Its probably the same for the helmet you are after though you will need to double check that.

I bought a Bell helmet from demon tweaks at the show last year got around 15% off so there are deals to be done.

As others have said the import fees and VAT charges can make buying from abroad more expensive.

Nope, car helmets dont get let off...

I bought a lid at the show last year, got it VAT free and 10% of the price as well... from GPR.

..ask nicely and you'll be amazed at what you can get.

Does that mean I can still do speed events next year with my blue stickered 6685 helmet? Where can I check this?
