Though to be fair does not appear to be their fault...

It's a crying shame this - I watch the majority of my viewing in HD and really appreciate it - having seen some F1 footage in HD (Williams specials on Eurosport) I can confidently say it makes a big difference when you're used to it in SD(as it has with Top Gear).
I heard that every race was actually filmed with HD cameras and that politics gets in the way (thanks Bernie)

As said, that's mostly bull, F1 is filmed in HD and has been for some time, last bit to be upgraded was the on-board stuff...
My guess is that the BBC won't pay the extra for HD..
and if they did, they would then put it on BBCHD with it's stupidly low bandwidth encoders* so we end up with a worse picture than std TV anyway!

- in the context of the BBC reducing the bandwidth for BBCHD to the point it looks like you-tube at times.
got sky HD recently too.Other motorsports have been in HD for years,Nascar has been in HD for 6 years,i wish the BBC would stop ar5ing about!

If I'm not mistaken nobody broadcasts any actual HD F1 footage (it's just the pre and post race bits which are in HD for those which say they're HD). Happy to be corrected though.
FOM make a "HD" feed at each race, but it's usually just upscaled SD and is kept for internal use only. There was a local arrangement in place for the Japanese GP and 1 or 2 other races have been filmed in HD but that's about it.
FOM don't provide a HD World Feed and that's the issue. The old days of Host Broadcaster arrangements are gone (other than for Monaco) so the TV companies aren't to blame.

There are several links in the chain and they all need to be joined up before we can sit at home and watch the whole show in HD.
1. Trackside cameras (locally provided) need to be HD
2. Interview cameras (such as BBC's pit-lane & grid walkabout cameras)- ditto
3. All links (quite a few of them are wireless) - ditto
4. Onboard cameras and wireless systems - ditto
5. All feeds out of the circuit and any uplinks - ditto
Some of the investment to do all of this will come from FOM, some from the host country and some from each visiting broadcaster. Plus, FOM will want to charge the broadcasters a premium for supplying HD feeds.
If FOM are responsible for paying for 1, 3, 4 and some of 5 above then they will only spend the money if they can sell the feeds to the broadcasters at a price they deem worthwhile.
Pretty much all the technical problems have now been solved. The last one was getting a reliable HD onboard system and it looks as though Gigawave have sorted it as the last few races featured several cars with HD onboards, but I believe they were installed only as a test to try and convince FOM to pay for them this year.
If FOM don't see the benefit then they won't pay for the infrastructure. The HD onboards looked a lot better (albeit we could only watch them in SD) but were they that much better?
Personally I think it will take a bit longer to build momentum so there's a real demand from the public for HD broadcasts. When Freeview HD is established, that will help a lot I reckon, but that's going to take most of this year to get going, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Who actually films F1?. I mean is it pretty much the same team of people at every circuit?. How do they ensure continuity of equipment and procedures?. On a more annoying point, why was there a big effort to show on board and various car mounted cameras a few years ago, (i think after bernies pet project pay per race didnt take off), yet now it has reverted back to very average camera angles etc, not much in car etc.
