Superleague 2010 Calendar

Chaps,

The calendar has been released for this year's Superleague season. I'm guessing by the low turn-out at Donington last year that not many PH members were there. However, ignoring the football connection, these cars are phenomenal. They sound awesome, are seriously quick and they even move around a little bit. I'd highly recommend getting to Silverstone or Brands if you're able to. Young Craig Dolby is a real talent to watch out for as well...

Scott Mansell was a little disappointing at Donington last year, but understandably so given he'd had no testing. Keeping fingers crossed that Craig is back racing for Spurs again this season - he did a cracking job last year. Here's a truly dreadful shot of Craig's car from Donny.

I have heard some stories about Scott - I do not know the ins and outs so I will not repeat it. He has had some good results in the past and was in an f1 car at Mallory a little while ago when we were testing (not ideal).

I was told some time ago he was involved with talks with an f1 team but nothing came of it. I think thats past history now.

I didnt make Donny superleague last year - but Some of the cars I'm involved with were there doing a support race or something (unofficial round) I recall the weather was bad? I think I was a Silverstone that day watching Monoposto for the first time.

I sincerely hope you're wrong there, Ben.

I've been following this series for the last 2 years, not only in the UK, but I also went to Jerez, Zolder, Monza & Jarama with some mates. Fantastic cars as Chevron says, & supporting Craig (who is also partial to driving Exiges on track) has made our trips even more enjoyable.

By its existence it took money that could have been spent with A1GP, shame as that series did a lot of things that F1 doesn't and has done good work in getting countries with little motorsport heritage involved, arguably more than holding a GP to empty grandstands in Outer Mongolia

as soon as the guy funding it throws in the towel.
Given the perilous state of some of the football teams I cannot belive any cash at all is coming from them. This series really should never have happened, regardless of how fantastic the cars may be to watch.
If Cart Indy car is anything to go by, even when everyone see's sense and goes for one series, it may well be too late.

The series is privately sponsored and the football teams don't put up any cash. The cars are better than A1GP and there are fewer also-rans in the field. What the future will hold, I don't know, but if you enjoy seeing high-powered single-seaters driven by top drivers but also want paddock access and the opportunity not to spend £200 for the privilege, this is the series for it.

I never really did get the connection between football teams and a racing series. Football gets enough coverage as it is and if it's a good racing series it's a shame that it has to be associated with it.

At least with A1GP there was a national connection, but football!!!! Please!!!!

Surprising how many non-football folk say that, then after attending a Superleague race meeting completely change their mind........cos in practice, apart from the livery, footie plays very little part in the proceedings. My 3 mates who also regularly Superleague races, "hate" football with a passion, but love the races, from the knock out qualifying to the 2 races..... the 2nd a complete reversal of the finishing places in the 1st race......

Well worth a try, & if you don't like it, no problem, but please don't just dismiss it because of the football connection. Here are a couple of short clips from Monza in October 2009, & Jarama in November 2009.

It's wrong of me to dismiss it for such a superficial reason, I know that but when I look at the results of a racing series and see a list of football teams it just turns me off. Football gets enough coverage and press as it is. There's plenty of racing that I like to see and don't get a chance to, I don't need to embrace this one.

Mind you, if it gets football fans out of the terraces to watch some proper sport...

I can understand the cynicism - I think football is a total nonsense. However, I think sonorous 750bhp V12s are the best thing ever so I embraced. Still, nobody is forcing you to attend and you are perfectly entitled to your opinion. I'm fairly sure young Pesky and I will be at Silverstone with a decent contingent of Lotus-owning folk if anyone fancies joining us.

No Problem with the football connection even though there is only a tentative link with the club and the hardcore footy fans probably have no idea "their" car even exists.
What gets me is how someone can think that starting high level racing championship is a goer in the first place or even needed.

pesky, you are completely missing my point. As I keep stressing, there is no problem with the cars or the show its the idea that every couple of years a new single seater series is started while the existing ones are either struggling for numbers or just not happenning at all.

Autosport this week makes the point that Superleague could fill the position of Champ Car in Europe. I think there is a market for such a series - not necessarily a career formula, but one for professional drivers not in F1. There are so many career ladders now that there is a clear abundance of talent which is operating at a high level. Some guys will earn a career in FNippon, others in DTM and a few in LMP/GT but the number of paid drives is tiny by comparison to the number of drivers capable of filling them. I would generally be sceptical of such a concept, but having seen GP2, F2, WSR, F3 and Superleague in the last couple of season, the Superleague cars are the most appealling and when you're travelling 300 miles to go to watch racing that makes a big difference. Whether it survives, only time will tell, but the generous prize fund is enough to ensure it will remain attractive for drivers.
