Must admit I've not tried to understand the detail enough yet (like how 1/4 of the top 100 are from NASCAR), but got to be a source of endless 'discussion'.....

One thing that did cross my mind though was that it perhaps should be based on more than a single year? (but with previous years being reduced in significance)

Kinda baffled me that one, doesn't really give you the whole picture. Oh well we do all enjoy a good list to stir debate in the off season ho ho!

According to the How It Works online booklet, it looks like the rankings are decided on the basis of each driver's qualifying and race results weighted according to the importance of the championship category. Seems like a reasonable premise, but it's the details the matter of course. By the way, if my understanding of the system is correct, the rankings would favour drivers who compete in multiple championships, like many of the NASCAR and IRL drivers do.

The rankings seems intended only to reflect short-term performance, rather than historical performances, so I think it's OK that they're basing it on just a season.

And why shouldn't NASCAR drivers get recognised for their performance in these kinds of rankings? It's not like they're crap drivers. J Villeneuve and J P Montoya have shown that NASCAR is no walk in the park.

PS: The top 100 also feature 21 F1 drivers, and 7 drivers who have competed in WRC.
