NASCAR at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

Hi all,
I'm planning a trip to the US for a couple of weeks to take in New York/Boston/New England - bit of a driving holiday, really (shame Hertz don't hire out the corvettes on the east coast, as far as I can tell, anyway).
Anyway I have noticed that there is a NASCAR race at NHMS on the 19th of September - right in the middle of my holiday. Has anyone been to the US to watch a NASCAR race? Anyone been to the NHMS? Is it any good? I am a dedicated motorsports fan but I have never really watched that much NASCAR (fragments of a few races here and there). What is the racing like at NHMS? I gather its quite a flat short oval.
Any tips/comments much appreciated.

Not the most spectacuar track to see a race on and its rearely an exciting one or popular with the drivers. The oval is flat, ie no banking and had a dangerous reputation a few years ago after a couple of deaths there. Its unbeliveable that Nascar visit here twice a year in close succession while North Carolina doesnt get a race at all anymore.
I am sure you would have a great time anyway as all Nascar races are fun to be part of.

They've picked up Charlotte/Lowes Motor Speedway and moved it to another state?eastlmark said:

The northeast, including the 2 at Pocono, which is more middle-Atlantic, has 5.
I'll accept that the southeast is the birthplace of NASCAR (although of course not the birthplace of stock car racing), but 17-5 seems more than fair to the southeast. You may not like Louden, but it hosts the only Sprint Cup races in New England.
I mean, really - from northern North Carolina, you can easily drive to Charlotte, Richmond, Bristol, Atlanta, and Martinsville, can't you?

it used to be rowdy rivalry in the days of Earnhardt(snr and Jnr)/Gordon but that has lost a lot since they (jnr I mean of course) became team mates. Yep, both of the Busch brothers get a lot of stick from the crowd as will Gordon and Johnston. Ricky Craven was always the crowd favorite at NH, unfortunatly he no longer races. Civilised? in NH probably more so than down south. Rowdy? nah, not real rowdyness and the guy next to you will almost certainly offer you his popcorn/nuts/chips whatever.any thoguhts/experience on what it will be like in the stands on the day. Yes and no.
I was a big fan when he was a teenager racing midgets and sprints. He was obviously immensely talented, and I liked his style of driving.
I continued to support him when he went to NASCAR. I can't even recall what they called then what is now "Nationwide", but he did quite well as a rookie driving something totally different to his experience. He was given that opportunity by Bill Davis Racing.
I don't recall the details, but I got the impression that he sort of hosed Bill Davis in order to step up to Winston Cup. Maybe he had another year to go on his contract or something. Because of that, I was less keen to see him do well in WC.
Of course, he then did very well, and was the top driver for the next decade. He also married that beauty queen or whoever she was, which added to the OTT perfection. As I tend to root for underdogs, I hoped that someone else would beat him.
I supported Kulwicki, then after he was killed I supported Geoff Bodine (not sure why - he was an arch-rival of Ed Flemke's, and I once saw him really screw up one of Ed's races). I was always happy to see good people such as Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin do well too.
Since Martin's come back to a full schedule, and because now he in a sense is the underdog, he's my current favourite. Now that Gordon's no longer dominant, I am glad to see him do well (also, he's got that back problem, so deserves sympathy for that), after Martin.
Logano is impressive - we'll see how his career unfolds.
The people I now root against most ardently are Montoya and Kyle Busch - but who wouldn't?
Ive went to lots of NASCAR races in the past 20 years around the USA.As said back in the day it was a bit rowdy in the stands,no fighting,just banter,normally from/to Earnhardt Sr followers!!Nowadays its all gone,a bit of light hearted banter that would'nt offend a nun!!Plus there is plenty of security men AND proper armed policeman too,so there is'nt any threat of football style hooligasm,either in the past or nowadays.Plus the fact that you can buy a beer at the racetrack points to the fact that drunken fights aint a problem.Every person I've sat beside in the stand at all the NASCAR races were great people,I certainly didnt mind spending 4 hours in their company.So buy a ticket,enjoy the race,the noise of the V8's and the fans sitting around you.All the best,Micky
