Hi

I've posted in a few other places on this forum. I run a company that produces sound effects for video games. I've been asked by one game developer to find a rally car to record at the MIRA proving grounds near Nuneaton. We want to put microphones on the outside and inside of the car and basically just recording it being driven around, going up and down through the gears etc.

Is there anyone on here who has something we can use? If so, please get in touch: jerry@mediamill.co.uk

Thanks in advance

Jerry Ibbotson

Hmmm... microphones on the outside - What else will you hear other than wind noise ? May I suggest a rolling road with a decent car on it ? Hiring the MIRA test track seems like an expensive way to do it..

Hey - just to clarify - If you had wanted to record the sound of my Ultima V8 at MIRA proving ground, with me driving it, then I certainly wouldn't have said that a rolling road was the way to go....but because I don't have a top spec rally car, I am giving you my honest opinion smile

Hiya

This session is not on a rolling road but out on the trackbecause of the type of stuff the developers are after: really "natural" sounding audio of a car going up and down through the gears. Sadly, unless you've got a MIRA license (which the rally teams and car firms who use MIRA tend to have) then it will have to be a MIRA test driver who's actually behind the wheel. It's a bummer but sadly they specify that. I'll try and contact they person you suggested - thanks for the help!

Yes - I have now looked at his website, and I am sure he knows what he is doing...

If driving the car for real is the only way to record the sound files, then fair enough.

Best of luck to him, persuading someone to lend him their pride and joy for some random driver to thrash the bks off it round a test track smile

Hah.... thanks for the vote of confidence Ben!

To be honest, 90% of the time we do use some kind of indoor rolling road / Dynapack to record on. But for this particular job, the game developers want the sounds of car being driven for real. It's all down to the way they're implementing engine sounds in their game. We did a trial run last year at MIRA, using an Aston V8 Vantage. The morning was spent in the dyno chamber and the afternoon on the track. They listened back to both recordings and have plumped for the track, as it fits their needs.

Oh, and a V8 Vantage sounds amazing anywhere! God knows how Aston get away with it!

So my original suggestion was not so stupid after all smile

Was it a proper "double-blind" test - or did they know which recording was which ?

They used my Mustang at MIRA. It was great to see and hear my car as an observer, rather than being sat in it. Plus there was some rather nice machinery being tested that day, including a couple of BTCC touring cars. An enjoyable day out smile

It's a very different kind of sound. Dyno recordings are much more clinical whereas on a track, gear changes have a nice wobble to them. And you can't change gear properly on a DynaPack anyway, as the wheels freeze when you take your foot off the gas! It's horses for courses.
