IMO Jones was a top and highly respected driver and one of those that retired too soon (when he first did in 1981). Maybe the first F1 driver to pull off classy moves, perhaps with the exception of Gilles, though of course they co-existed.

Again, I feel the need to defend myself for the SERIOUSLY anal and restrictive selection of music YT allows. It was about 4 version of progressing obscurity before YT finally allowed it... which tune anyway? The One or Crash Landing?

Brilliant. Thanks for making the effort; Jonesy was one of my first heros in the FW07 which was I first became interested in F1 although its waned somewhat these days.

AJ was a no nonsense kind of guy , he seemed to be a perfect fit for the Williams team and gave us and Williams something to shout about keeping the turbo charged Renaults and Ferraris honest thank god. He was also known for coming out with stuff like "I think the F1 rulebook should be written in language that even my wife could understand" , not very subtle but you got the point..straight away. Interesting to see the old footage and I still miss James Hunts commentary to this day , he had a way with words as well didn't he ?

No, but regular TV footage pretty much did!

The first full year of F1 coverage brokered under the FOCA deal was 1981. That's why the earliest summary video of an entire season based on the broadcast TV recordsings is the 1981 season.

Prior to that there was not blanket coverage of an entire F21 season and there wasn't one rights holder of the TV or film footage - so compiling an annual review would have been virtually impossible.

The best semi-complete reviews prior to the FOCA ones are film documentaries made by Brunswick of the 1970 to 1979 season. They aren't anything like as good as the FOCA compilations but they are sometimes the only film records that have survived.

Alan Jones was my first hero in F1, and then i discovered Gilles Villeneuve so i had 2 heroes.

I was at the Dutch GP when AJ and GV were running nose to tail - before GV did his 3 wheeling act. Was opposite the pit entrance and saw GV drive in with the wheel dragging behind him. Happy days.

The circuits didn't half used to flow more then didn't they, before they all got chicane blight.
