Good to hear such positive vibes coming from Alonso about this years Ferrari
Fernando Alonso has declared the Ferrari F10 the best car he has ever driven - and says the team is yet to show what it can really do.
Ferrari was quickest throughout the first test of the winter at Valencia a fortnight ago, but has kept a lower profile during the past fortnight at Jerez.
However Alonso has set some eye-catching times on long runs, and he ended this week's test full of confidence.
"There are no reasons to be pessimistic," the double champion told Spanish media. "As of today, this is the best car I've ever had."
Having taken over from team-mate Felipe Massa on Friday, Alonso enjoyed the best of the weather at Jerez this week, and was able to accumulate plenty of mileage - logging 269 laps over the past two days.
"The two days that I tested it was sunny and the track was dry and I could work more than I thought so I'm very happy," he said. "We have done a good job in terms of reliability and long runs."
Alonso said he was not underestimating Ferrari's rivals - but warned them that the Italian squad had not displayed its real potential yet.
"Red Bull, McLaren and Renault have been very quick and they have shown their cards, while we are still hiding ours," he said. "We are going to analyse the data, but we are very optimistic. As of today, if I were in a different team I would be looking at Ferrari because everything is going very well.
"Maybe where Ferrari needs to improve is in the short runs with little fuel onboard. That's where the Red Bull and the McLaren have been quicker, and they will be the reference to try and improve the F10 in the next test in Barcelona."
The Spaniard's declaration comes after McLaren's Jenson Button said that he also reckoned Ferrari could be the team to beat.
"I think the Ferrari is a very strong car," Button said yesterday. "If you look at their runs today, they're very consistent. I think they have better consistency than anyone at the moment."

The part which amused me was that he said that McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes had shown all their cards, but Ferrari hadn't shown all theirs yet. Not sure how he knew about the former part of that, and I guess he missed the irony of the latter.

True BUT why tell us that other teams have shown there cards but Ferrari have not? What does he know that we dont exactly? It’s nice to see that all the nonsense spouted by the feckless and ignorant, about the F10 being so bad a car that all the engineers at GS in Maranello should be fired (before it had even turned a wheel ), is turning out to be a load of rubbish.

I was at Jerez on Saturday and all the "Premier league" players looked great, if I was betting I would say McLaren rather than the Ferrari though there must have been 25000 Spaniards who would bet against me. I really do think that there will be a lot of interest as to who will be racing for the points for 9th and 10th this year;. Williams look very strong, but so do Force India and Sauber.
The “also rans” are easy to spot even for non-fans. The Lotus has a fabulous colour scheme but looks like a 10-year old concept, the rear wing end-plates particularly looking as though they were designed for sponsorship space rather than a finessed aerodynamic design. They have done well to sign Kovi and Truly as the drivers both deserve better.
Virgin seemed only to be able to manage to string a few laps together at any time, so the chances of USF1 and Campos putting on a good show without winter testing seems a highly improbable way to go racing at the highest echelon. Prodrive and Lola had to be much better bets.

The teams do have a level of insight into how far the other teams are pushing. Lots of stats - tyre wear on runs, engine peak RPM (measured acoustically, lots of base data now that we have engine stability), fair amount of people moving between teams and taking intellect with them...
I go with Schumachers comment along the lines of the top 4 teams are clear, the split between them less so.
And the Fezza doesn't exactly look slow...

Don't disagree with you there. The irony of saying that Ferrari had not shown all their cards yet was what really got me. But he can't know if there are some things which the others are holding back that aren't obvious to outsiders.The teams do have a level of insight into how far the other teams are pushing. Can't wait for the start of the season. Need to find a way to watch whilst on hols in Northern Sweden and get UK coverage. Proxy + iplayer - hopefully!
