Ordinarily, all the teams would have their cars and kit back at the factory by Monday night / Tuesday morning.

Given the issue with flights at present, it will be interesting to see who blames this for poor performance in Barcelona!

How long would it take them if they all piled everything into a freighter and sailed back to Europe?

Probably make it to Barcelona port just in time for the race weekend.

My guess is that they'll probably fly to Athens and road freight from there.

A couple more eruptions from Iceland and they may not get back at all. I guess they will have the trucks at the factories to take to Barcelona but may not have cars or personnel.

Spanish airspace isn't actually closed (at the moment)... could airfrieght and fly the guys straight there: ship extra stuff out with the trucks....

Have a mass Gumball type race from Shanghai to Barcelona - with different categories for -

transporters
motorhomes
and, of coursde, the F1 cars themselves.

I think that is a race I'd like to hear Legard commentate on...

"..and as they take the slip road onto the AutoRoute...... itssss Button from Alonso from Webber from Chandock .....with Pierre in the Renault Artic and Julian in the Redbull Hospitality Van jostling for the middle lane...........Oh! and thats Vettel coming up in the distance...on the back of the Green Flag recovery truck......" hehe

I thought Brundle or Legard said one of the times was booked on a Luthansa flight back on Sunday night and it was guaranteed to go. They seemed somewhat surprised though.

I'd guess they'll pack up and fly back to as close as they can and the transporters will to meet the aircraft and collect the freight back to the factory. Could actually benefit the non-UK based teams who wont need to cross the Channel twice.

They could fly to Spain (I don't think Spain is covered by a nasty polar bear killing ash cloud is it?) get all the main kit stored for the Spanish GP, then drive & ferry back from Spain with the rest of the equipment & cars and the personnel.

it's gonna be a logistical nightmare to unpack the flyaway freight boxes and get stuff into the trucks anywhere apart from the factory i'd have thought. to me, it looks like there could be a serious possibility of the barcelona race not happening.

no great loss.

i do quite enjoy the idea of a gumball type race tho. it would be that combined with a paris-dakar type race with the big trucks, cars, and scooters smile

i have a question tho as i'm not able to get that much info. i'm in shanghai at the moment - if my flight back to the UK is cancelled, what about re-routing to come back to london via america, is there ash to the east of the UK too?

yup - sorry! There was a brief period where a few flights got in/out from Glasgow I think heading east, but that closed again. Looks like some of the airlines are getting itchy about the lockdown and sending a couple of test planes up.... so maybe even if the cloud doesn't move away the limitation may get relaxed a bit once they have better data on the effects
