Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid gets shakedown ahead of 24-hour debut



Rapid F1 rookie Nico Hulkenberg has put the hybrid Porsche 911 GT3 R through its paces in a three-lap test at the Nordhschleife.

This video of Hulkenberg's short blast around the 'Ring - the F1 racer's first run at the Nordschleife - certainly proves the full-blooded nature of the hybrid 911 race car; you only need to listen to that flat-six growl or the whining transmission to realise that this is no half-hearted marketing effort.

Putting the Williams F1 driver behind the wheel of the Porsche was no random decision, either; the electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the cockpit beside the driver - which generates the electric power instead of conventional batteries - is made by Williams.

The system works much like the F1 KERS system from 2009. When overtaking or accelerating out of a bend, the driver can manually override the controls by pressing the boost paddle on the steering wheel and sending energy from the charged flywheel generator to the front axle. This gives an extra 161bhp after each charge process and is available for approximately six to eight seconds.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid makes its competitive debut at the Nurburgring 24-hour race on 15-16 May.

And Mr Hulkenberg's conclusion? "Great car, fascinating technology and an incomparable track."

There have been whispers of Porsche joining Williams to make a return to F1. I doubt it's true and probably sparked by someone getting their wires crossed and jumping to conclusions, but videos like this surly prompt some questions. Personally, as a Porsche fan, I'm rather see them back in LMP1 than F1. Then again, I'm sure Porsche, as great as they are, could benefit from some of the funky F1 tech that Ferrari enjoy as a result.

As for the video, the GT3R Hybrid looks rather quick and damn good looking to boot.

2 things:
As a porsche owner i would prefer if they kept to their own super cups and le mans rather than entering F1 which is very specialised, porsche engines generally only go up to 7k so developing a v8 that goes to 18k would have little benefit to me.

has any one else noticed the engine noise mid corner - is this the engine management on Porsche race gt3s on lift off? I dont think I have ever heard that from a road car?

This looks promising. Perhaps they could also produce a kind of answer to the Caparo T1, a Williams F1 car 'Porsche-ified' for the road and capable of clearing a speed hump, keeping the rain off the driver and not setting you on fire?

For a start, even some road-going Porsches will rev to 8400rpm, which is the result of years of experience on track and race-derived internals. As a Porsche owner, I can't see how it wouldn't benefit you, both physically and sentimentally. I do agree with the notion they should concentrate on LMP and Endurance racing though, that's where they've really excelled over the years. I'd quite like to see a non-diesel win Le Mans again sometime soon, and preferably something from Zuffenhausen.

What time is that on the video? I'm only hearing the whine of the sequential gearbox with maybe a bit more from that flywheel?

Now thats a system I would like!!! Mind you, I would imagine it to be more of a challenge in a road car, as you wouldnt use the brakes enough to build the charge?

realistically the flywheel system is a technological dead end, yes it has it's place, but it can't store significant Kw/h of energy (scaling issues), my guess is currently in this guise is marginally cheaper than battery technology, but not for long.

Guys – Just a couple of points that I’m not sure all are aware of.
1. This car has already raced in two VLN races. It placed 6th in its debut race and came in 3rd in its second race.
2. The race lap times set (so far) by this car are about 7 to 11 seconds off the pace (at the Ring)
3. Contrary to popular belief, Williams is only responsible for designing and building (following Porsche’s specifications) one of the components of the hybrid system; the flywheel generator.
4. This system is considered a better option for long distance racing than the battery option, as it is better able to handle the huge amount of braking and accelerating cycles involved in endurance racing.
5. It is not likely that Porsche will go to F1 as it is concentrating on the possibility of developing a hybrid LMP1 car in the future (much depends on future rule changes for Hybrids)

So the flywheel must be acting as a regenerative braking device for input and then you can unleash the flywheel power back into the drive train. Sounds like a pretty good/simple idea. It's certainly much less complex than an electric motor, controller and batteries. Maybe not such a dead end really when you think about it. This system is almost a "something for nothing" outcome. Granted the flywheel has got to weigh a few kilos but it could mean smaller/lighter brakes. I would trust both Porsche and Williams to have explored all the alternatives before building this system.

Yes, it will no doubt, see further development.
The problem is that this particular system is not permitted under the current ACO regulations (that's why you see the car being tested outside ACO sanctioned races)
Current ACO regulations only foresee the use of electrical power storage (it is still under debate if this system meets this requirement or not)and rule that the hybrid system must only be used for fuel saving purposes (not power gain)
Hopefully this will change. (or we will see diesels dominate for many years to come)

I'm pretty sure this has an electric motor and just uses the flywheel instead of a battery. Can anyone confirm/rubbish this?

Also, could super capacitors help a battery take in the amount of energy generated when braking in a race?

Yes - There is a third electric motor that acts as a Flywheel rotor.It stores kinetic energy at up to 40,000 RPM. the rotor acts as a flywheel and stores the energy mechanically as rotation energy. No battery involved.
