THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORT RICH LIST TOP 10

1 Dave Whelan Football £190m

2 David Beckham Football £125m

3 Johnny Dumfries Motor racing £110m

4 Lennox Lewis Boxing £95m

5 Eddie Irvine Motor racing £80m!

6 Jody Scheckter Motor racing £60m

7 Dave Richards Motor racing £58m

8= David Coulthard Motor racing £50m

8= Nigel Mansell Motor racing £50m

10 Jenson Button Motor racing £43m

Hamilton is reckoned to be worth £35m, Franchitti £36m, J Stewart £41m. Obviously you have to take it all with a pinch of salt, and bear in mind that eg Dumfries' money comes from having inherited an estate.

I'm guessing that most of Sheckter's money has been made outside of Motorsport. Didn't he flog off his Firearms simulator Co several years ago?. I seem to remember him having a rather large Organic Farm too.

Correct. He sold it for a silly amount of money but I can't just remember what it was.

Irvine is into property in a big way. He started investing his money in it when he was racing in F.Nippon/ Japanese F3000 before F1.

Most of his cash has come from outside racing.

Doesn't David Coulthard own a hotel in Monaco? I know they haven't made their money from racing but I know 3 or 4 people who race in one or two of the same series that I do that would be well up that list, I think one would be top.

These lists are always a bit dubious in terms of the people they leave out (who may not want the publicity so keep their activities and reported incomes quiet) and the accuracy of the figures.

I presume the qualification for being in this list is that you must have been a professional in your chosen sport at one time or another. There are many 'gentleman' drivers racing right now who would have more money, but not one penny of it would have come from racing, so they don't get a look in.

Certainly, Johnny Dumfries and Jody Scheckter would have got a relatively small amount of their fortune from racing, but they have both been professional, paid drivers.

Incidentally, Jody has made very little profit from his farm so far. It really is a labour of love for him and he's put a great deal of time, effort and money into doing it right. Coulthard's hotel can't be a big money-spinner I wouldn't think. It's more of a vanity project. However, the Chocolate Martinis they serve in the bar there really are quite nice biggrin

But he's never been a paid, professional driver.

It's the same way someone who is rich enough to spend all their time playing golf (and getting very good at it) and even maybe buy their local golf club won't figure in this list either.

Doesn't DC have several hotels? I know he has one just south of the Forth Bridge as well as the one in Monaco.

There was talk of another Coulthard hotel going up next to MB World at Brooklands, but I think the financial crises scuppered that plan.

He may very well have more hotels. It's a property-based business after all, so even if you don't make a lot of money from the hotel itself, it's a fairly safe investment.

Ye, he is getting a small collection of hotels and property... I think he sold a stake in Dakota Hotels couple of years ago.

David Coulthard sold his interest in the hotel some time ago after a somewhat messy courtcase.

J Schekter I believe has had some interest in selling armaments manufactured in South Africa to interested parties elsewhere. His son on the other hand is good at spending money with ladies of the night!!!

Funny that they did not mention Ron Dennis, Frank Williams, Eddie Jordan, Tom Walkinshaw, Earl of Goodwood, and there are of course a great deal of people who have made money out of motorsport who are not drivers, nor team owners but live in the BRDC.....or in Bernie Ecclestones case just outside the BRDC!!!

These lists are so badly put together by chinless wonders who knwo nothing about the real money which the better smaller accountants hide.

So he came from money then?

Not really money from sporting then is it.
