Monaco History redux

With the wealth of information in the PH community, surely someone can explain how a race generally thrashed as not a race but 'qualifying and thereafter a reliability test' is revered as the Greatest of the Grands Prix? Looking at old photographs of the 1960s races in particular, there seems to be acres of passing area in places where now it looks as though the cars traverse through a tiny tube of open space through the city. Have they changed the course much? Are the cars just too quick now for the in-town driving experience?
Some of you have memories from further back, some of you attend the race. When was the last time there was a 'great race' at Monaco? Or has there ever been one at all, with reverence paid merely to those who qualify well and don't destroy their cars thereafter? Is the course just so tough that getting on pole and not crashing are crowning achievements? If there were great races, what was the top?
I haven't been to the race, would love to go. I fear that it's rating as an event has more to do with the money, casinos and nightlife than it does automobile sport (though there seems to be plenty of sport in the nightlife).
As a post race observation, Alonzo's charge from the pits to fifth surely involved some good driving, no?

Monaco has changed over the years and, yes, it has become narrower in width and in field of view due to armco being in places where there was none before ie Beau Rivage.
There have been some fantastic races there, some have been better for a driver not overtaking than a race where a driver overtook any car he pleased very easily.
The circuit is now more difficult to drive than it was in the 60's, say, but that is mainly because of the lap speeds rising.
Just to add that Alonso's race was good in parts, but he didn't overtake anyone other than a Virgin, Lotus or HRT. The rest was down to an ambitious stretegy that played into his hands due to a crap regulation which needs getting rid of.
