Damon's revenge on Schumacher ?
Discussion
So - was it revenge, as Damon was acting steward on Sunday ?
"Michael Schumacher has been given a 20s time penalty after the stewards ruled that his last corner pass on Fernando Alonso in Monaco was illegal.
The former champions had battled over sixth place into the Anthony Noghes turn after the safety car came in at the end of the last lap.
Mercedes believed that the rules allowed overtaking moves to take place from the 'restart line' onwards as soon as the safety car came in, whereas Ferrari was adamant that this did not apply on the last lap.
The stewards agreed with Ferrari's interpretation, citing rule 40.13: "If the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking."

That rule contradicts itself. The race ends when the leading car crosses the finish line on the last lap. Therefore, if the safety car leaves the track before the lead car crosses the line then the race doesn't end with the safety car deployed. QED.
On the other hand, it was schumacher that got demoted, so I'm not bothered whether it's right or wrong

I think the intent of the rule was that the cars would pass the chequered flag without the safety car being in front of them. Unfortunately they didn't leave the safety car signs out and showed a green flag/light hence safety car no longer deployed.
Going on this Schumis' move is valid. He should not have been penalised.

I doubt very much if either of them would consider it revenge. But I bet they both saw the irony in it.
As has been said before, the problem lies with the rules which appear to contradict themselves. I believe in this instance that Merc got it wrong.

t, Hill had already joked about fining Shumi 10K just for turning up, it may have been said in jest but it also shows his mindset, couple this with Massa getting let off with a very dubious "it wasnt me" defence for screwing up Buttons fastest lap, and Rubens not even being investigated for a clear vilotaion of the rules (not putting his steering wheel back on after leaving the car) let a lone trowing it into the path of another race car. Add that to unfair/heavy punishment and I dont see how any one could see it as anything elseKrazyIvan said:

Add that to unfair/heavy punishment and I dont see how any one could see it as anything elseI think that the intention of the rule is clear, however it's not the intention which counts. What counts is what it actually says. According to the rules as they are written it seems that Shumi was in the right.
This is a case of badly written rules being 'exploited' aginst their intention. It would be better if the rules were written properly in the first place. I hope they will be re-written following this to make them say what they are supposed to say. In the mean time the Ferrari interpertation was incorrect and they lost out because of it.
It was pretty clear that all the drivers were gunning it and the commentary team were explaining that the drivers work wasn't yet done, and that Mark better be careful not to give the lead away.
This is just the latest in a LONG series of decisions which benefits Ferrari.

Sour grapes on Damon Hill's part, but I never was a fan of his.
Incorrect. Hill was advising the other stewards, he did not make the decision. He may had had influence, but that was all it was.Just because you've never been a fan, doesn't mean Hill is corrupt. On the contrary, Hill is regarded as a very honest bloke, unlike Mr. Schumacher who has a well known and well deserved reputation as a cheat. I'm not sure a 20 second penalty would make up for having a world championship stolen either.
Having said all that, I think the stewards decision was wrong and will be over-turned at appeal dur to the green lights.

regarding rubens, the wheel being put back on the car is only really necessary if the car is in a position to be pushed by marshals, clearly this wasnt an option at monaco so there was really no need to penalise him. as for massa, it was predicted that something would happen in qualifying given the speed differential of the fastest and slowest cars, it just so happened that it was in Q3 and massa and button were involved....
