Blue Flags to be Removed from F1???
Discussion
I think it is worth a try. If it is a total disaster they can always switch back. As it stands now the backmarkers end up 3 or 4 laps down instead of 1 or 2 because they spend 2/3 of the race slamming on the brakes at inopportune moments. A lack of blue flags doesn't mean the backmarkers won't let lapping traffic through, they just won't have to drive stupidly to do it. They can lift off and let them by on the next straight, or the lapping traffic could make a pass when they can. They are significantly faster to be lapping in the first place after all.

Works in Karting.
First thing my lads had to learn in karting was NOT to look behind to see who was lurking - because when the follower saw you looking, he would do you!

Sorry, but in karting your peripheral vision is superior to that of an F1 - for starters you can see more than just the top of your front wheels. Oh and you can actually turn your head if you wanted to.
You use sound in karting too, if someone is close, you can hear them in either ear more clearly...in an F1, the ear plugs are quite advanced and the engines are notoriously loud.
It's incomparable.

As the safety of an F1 car has improved, unfortunately the peripheral vision has decreased too.andygo said:

Not at one of my local indoor tracks it dosent, races just turn into demolition derbys First thing my lads had to learn in karting was NOT to look behind to see who was lurking - because when the follower saw you looking, he would do you!
. As for F1 I dont see how all the front runners being artificialy held up by the back of the grid monkeys will improve the show at all. When I learnt to race in the 90s blocking people who were obviously quicker let alone lapping you was just not on, but then I guess we live in a different age now. God I sound old.

In Euro karting, if someone caught you and you were leading, if they were on their own, you would let them by. Unless it was closing laps...of course. If you held someone up, you hold yourself up and the pack catches...if they catch you, you're done for.

or maybe return the Blue flag to its original meaning.
that is 'look in your mirrors' rather than 'leap out the way or else we'll punish you'

I was about to post exactly the same thing.
Steady blue = Someone right up yer chuff.
Waved Blue = Someone trying to pass you.
None of this pass three blue flags and you have to throw the car into the scenery crap. Passing backmarkers is, and always has been, until recently, a part of the racing driver's skill set. Some are better at it than others.

We saw similar though, Trulli, Glock, Kovi made it easier for Alonso to get by, than Di Grassi did.
The "3 blue flags and then a penalty" is rule is quite recent. It used to be that there was no expectation that a backmarker would let a front runner past wherever they were on the track - usually it would be done at the backmarkers convenience.
They are needed else a backmarker may let through the leader, but not the guy in 2nd place who was catching the leader... until he gets held up by the backmarker who let the leader go.
The backmarker isn't part of that p1/p2 race, so should stay out the way and let each car through as soon as they catch him, so as not to hinder or assist either party in that p1/p2 race. Same applies for other battles which catch back markers.

But in F1 you will have an egineer or principal on the radio telling you Mr X is behind you and he's faster so keep an eye out (or even wait until a nice straight and let him go past).graememac said:

I'll think on it to see if I like the idea. I can't work through all the situations at the moment.
Let us know when you've had chance to think about it and i'll inform the FIA then
that I think it's a bad idea. The cars have changed so the driver is limited in what he can see around him. It is unreasonable to remove what is essentially a safety device from them.It would end up with the leaders being stuck behind some t
t like Trulli for half the race.Forums | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
