LMP1 Cars

Evening, just watching free practice and it got me thinking. There's plently of 10,20,30 year old F1's on the market for sale, but i rarely see LMP1 cars for sale.

Anyone know why?

I imagine the manufacturers want to keep hold of them, but there are a few for sale. I've found 15+ LMP cars so far including this;

LMP1 cars aren't that old. There's a big market for the older Group C and world sportscars, especially when there's a suitable race series for them.

There are no 10, 20, 30 year old LMP1 cars.

exactly, also LMP cars are hardly that memorable in the same way a Porsche 962C, Sauber C11, Nissan NPTI 90, Spice SE90, etc.

Few F1 cars after the mid 1980's appear on the market and if they do they usually do not come with engines due to manufacturers keeping these. The cost of running one privately is huge and carbon fibre specialists are not cheap.

LMP1's are similar. The cars are usually owned by manufacturers, the engines would be kept and not sold, even ten years later. Secondly can you imagine how badly the car has been treated during any long distance race? With no race series to enter them into on the horizon, and GT1 or historic series well established these prototypes are museum pieces only!!

Lots of privateer LMPx cars are (ie not manufacturer chassis) around on the market but while they are still within the rules they seem to be able to change hands without being advertised!

don't agree with that, plenty of LMP's will use JUDD or the like, nothing stopping you going and either buying or leasing a JUDD engine, (or for that matter and DFV/DFR etc).

yes, it's going to cost, but it's all relative, running a Group C car is hardly peanuts.

many of the cars are pilliged for parts and morph into later cars. Grp C TWR Jags and Nissans shared same tub parts iirc

yeah, think group-C, there is a revival race at LeMans this weekend, there is a massive following for group C, there is a european histrric group-C race series too, a friend of mine races in it and he owns two Group-C 962 Porsches, each is insured for a cool 1 million - as you do......they are out there, but even the ones from the 80's are fetching serious money........nowdays you can pick up an old knackered lola or Radical LMP1/2 for a couple of hundred grand, and thats without the engine as everyone rents those from Judd/AER/Zytek etc

Alot of Manufacturer prototypes are sold to private collectors before they finish their racing lifes.

modern cars are so reliant upon electronic/computer wizardry that they aren't that reliable for private owners. There is however the Ferrari Clienti F1 programme. I'm not sure how this works but I guess you pay Ferrari a lot of money for the car and then a lot more to look after it. On several occasions i've seen recent F1 cars in either Euroboss or demo's that failed to run because the technicians still had the car in the pit plugged into a laptop unable to start the engine.
On a separate matter, I don't understand why someone would buy a race car without an engine.

Until you drive it, at least, from what I understand. Not awfully well developed, due to the politics of the situation.
