No F1 in HD before 2012

Formula 1 fans will have to wait until 2012 for the championship to be broadcast in High Definition, the sport's commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone has predicted, despite increasing calls for the switch.

By that time he will have considered he'd got his money's worth out of the non HD tech. Whe else would they not have made the switch? Gigawave perfected the technology in MotoGP and in yachting years ago, where the conditions are far more harsh. Once again, this is about money, nothing more, nothing less. The teams want the change - the cameras weigh a tenth of the old ones and are tiny in comparison.
if you read what he is saying, he is basically telling the broadcasters to ask (and then pay) for it.
it's not a technical issue, it;s just Berni wanting to be paid (more).
can you imagine what he would want for 3D?
remember why the multi-screen package got shelved, that cost Berni a lot, he is not about to do the same.

The onboards are already HD. They started making the transition 3 seasons ago!And MotoGP is still SD, BTW.
As we keep on saying in these threads, it's not the cameras that are the problem, but the feeds and the money being asked for to make the switch as a whole.
Watched Le Mans in HD this weekend - made a clear difference and was stunning.

Unfortunately I think I left Sky+ on Autosport HD (but on standby) Sunday afternoon. When I came to watch F1 @ 8pm Sky box had crashed and not recorded. Arse biscuits - had to wait for it to go up on iPlayer.

HD (trackside) is achievable now - sort of...
A lot (all) of the tracks rely on local broadcasters to provide the kit and feed. Whilst some countries have a consistent outside broadcast available in HD - not all have (and F1 is very "kit intensive") - and all would need to have in place before launching the service and committing to HD channels.
Next challenge is that for the majority of viewers - do they have the receiving kit in place? Yes, some people have Sky / Freesat, but on terrestrial, still very little bandwidth for many HD channels?
Finally, I also understand that the tests for the on car systems in HD are still work in progress - the current on board systems have had years to develop and improve. Building a very compact HD recorder that can withstand 5-6g, and transmit a full HD stream in realtime is probably quite hard to do. To pick up that stream (much more data than an SD stream) at somewhere like Monaco must be a technical nightmare?
Whilst I'm as keen for HD as anyone else, it isn't as simple as football (small number of cameras, fixed stadium, no camera on the ball) or tennis (again a controlled environment)...or as simple as NASCAR or Indy (single country and potentially single broadcaster)...
