I was just looking at some pictures from the "photo shoot" and they're running with the new exhaust layout copied from Red Bull. So much for the testing ban!

Typical of Ferrari - not that they are the 1s to have pulled something similar. Given that Bridgestone (at least in theory) don't go supplying tyres to teams for mid-season tests 1 has to wonder where they get them from.

It's not a test though (atleast in theory) so they probably will provide them with a set of tyres for the promotion. I didn't read that article but from what i gathered from somewhere else it was posted they just pootled round for a few laps.

The theory is that the tyres used, it being a promo, would be 'demonstration' tyres. ie rock hard.

Now that we have started on that analogy, sand stone is a rock, and so is granite...

I could be making it up but I thought I read that Bridgestone had "Promotional" tyres that had to be used for such things, which were good enough to promote on but useless for testing on.



If I am wrong, thats what they should do. Clearly marked "promo" tyres that wont be useful for testing anything on in the top 4 tenths of the performance envelope.

Can you extrapolate from your new bits performance on demo tyres how much improvement you'd get on the real things?

I suspect I know the answer.

Any team can do it, so I don't what the problem is here. All teams are allowed to do promo runs and young driver days, and there is nothing to prevent them from fitting new components on their cars during those runs. And yes, Bridgestone provides demonstration tyres which are much harder than GP tyres. Of course, you can extrapolate performance, but you couldn't rely on the extrapolations -- computer simulations and laboratory tests would provide better results per dollar cost.

They will have been (or 'should' have been) the same sort of tyres that Hiedfeld used for his demo around the 'ring a few years ago. He could go reasonably quickly, but not fast enough to try and set any kind of representative time as the tyres weren't 'proper' racing tyres.

However, will Ferrari have needed proper tyres to test things like exhausts and possibly other things like software or certain suspension parts? Just like a shakedown I suppose?

Presumably they fitteed the shakedown tyres on the straights & the demo tyres for the corners.

You would only want to go 100mph or so with the engine screaming to see what sort of effect on airflow the new exhaust would have. I think they managed that pretty well...

Fauzy did some demo laps of Snett at the weekend too (CTL Festival), conveniently shaking down Kovi's new chassis at the same time. No furore about that.

I enjoyed seeing it.

^^ Alonso says here, in German (which is clever of him, I didn't know he spoke the language) that the Fezza's new aero bits work fine at 60 km/h. He doesn't know if they work at faster speeds than that 'cos he was stuck behind a camera car & couldn't go any faster.

Leaving aside his admission that his car is now so rubbish that he can't even get past a camera car - either the video on YouTube is a fake or he's talking out of his bottom.
