Don't know if I am missing something massive here, but why didn't button try getting past kob, seemed like he just tucked up behind him for the whole race.

you're in it for the title. you know he has to pit.
Would YOu try to overtake somone that destructive?

Button knows that he can't beat hamilton on speed - he needs reliabbility / sense.

So you just sit behind him for 30 laps?

There is a bit of history between the two of them - and he knew Kob would have to pit before the end. Hamilton and Vettel were really too far up the road to catch and pass, so he kept his head and played the long game. Got him a Podium (well, obviously pre-stewards).

Button/Kobi were on similar tyres in a similar state. Valencia is an incredibly difficult circuit to overtake on so the risk was high to try to make a move. Once Kobi had stopped he was on fresh rubber and didn't have to pay any attention to making them last while his rivals were on worn tyres. His extra grip was sufficiently greater to make the opportunities to overtake.

I do see your points however it was a stupid amount of time he was sat there. He should have at least had a go in the first few laps after the safety car, as it was all even then.

Plus regarding tyres, when kob finally pitted button set the fastest lap. (lap 50 something) If this potential / spark was released 25 laps previous he could have passed. (escaping potential overtake from cars behind!)

I follow button, but sometimes I feel he needs a kick up the arse. Kob however did great job, pure satisfaction when he passed alonso.

I thought it was significant that Kobayashi's pace picked up significantly after Hamilton dropped back into him following his drive-through. Almost as if he were learning from Hamilton's lines through the corners. Very impressed with him this race.

I hardly ever saw Button "tucked up behind him", Kobi was holding a significant gap for most of the race.

Well done Kamui Kobayashi!
You've come a long way baby!!

Button ran at the same pace but stayed back to keep the car cool and save fuel. The fact K has a record for taking out cars overtaking him probably had a bearing on Button's position. K's overtakes were done on the Option after Schumacher had proved they worked and gave him a advantage good enough to overtake any other car. K also had the advantage in that "Cry-baby" was trying to pass the car in front which does give you an advantage. Button didn't get that chance as the Lapped cars Had to let K thru.
It also has to be said that given Button's pace in the last three laps, even with his new tyres I don't think K would have been able to catch Button

Agreed, although Button did noticeably close up when they were in traffic and tried to get a sniff of any opportunities. Kobayashi covered his lines well though and seemed to deal with the traffic comtorbably while always knowing where Button was.

I believe Button in fact set the fastest lap of the race one he'd been released from Kobayashi.

I think you were right as well, being right in front of that Sauber wing is not a happy place. Ironically they've got the FIA's safer roads campaign on it hehe

Not really an issue though, as the wing has usually long gone by the time of the accident! hehe

I don't think it was kob holding the gap, If anything button was dictating the speed, as a driver you need to react not act. If there is nothing pushing you on you just take it home. This is what kob was doing, however if button really pushed it on it would have been a different story. However if button went for kob there's the chance saubers behind could have done both.

he was saving his tyres. Button is really good at looking after his tyres.

The gap up to Hamilton was stable, and I think Jenson did the right thing by not bothering with the overtake. Even if he had got past him he would have been then trying to catch and then pass Hamilton, in the same car, with the same strategy, which would have been pretty much pointless, and a risk to both cars.

That's not to take anything away from Kobayashi though. He kept up with the lead cars, didn't make any mistakes, and then mugged Alonso right at the end which made me a very happy boy indeed. biggrin

Button played it spot on I thought. Kept in mind Kob would have to stop before the end anyway, the pace was in line with Ham/Vet, he didn't want too much tyre wear as it was a long stint at the end and he/they knew he'd slot in for a comfortable third.

I wonder what would have happened if Kob had come in 5 laps earlier to go on the softer tyres.

Button, Hamilton & Vettel would have been popping in qualifying laps until the flag methinks!

yes For me, the best part of a generally disappointing race.
BTW, is it just me or was the TV coverage very poor compared with other races? Maybe it's the layout but we saw very little of interest and when they did show something it was usually too 'close' - I couldn't get the 'bigger picture' or gauge distances.
