Please can you tell me something about the guy with the best job in F1. He is the Darth Vader figure who appears out of nowhere to hand the podium finishers their caps and watches and, having done this, silently disappears again to emerge at the next F1 venue. Wow, what a job – any chance of being his understudy?

Not quite sure what you mean by the ‘Darth Vader’ figure but the chap you’re referring to is David Warren, an ex-GB Olympic middle-distance runner and now one of the top men at Allsport, who run the podium procedure for the FIA. He is assisted by Alexander Molina.
They both have a lot on their plate, with organising the dignitaries and making sure they and the drivers are in the right place at the right time, the champagne is there and opened, the right anthems are played, the right flags are raised above the podium, and ensuring it all goes as smoothly as possible, as quickly as possible.
Warren doesn’t get involved with the sponsors’ watches, by the way. The teams leave them out, and the drivers are expected to pick them up and put them on themselves.
And if this seems like an easy life, you should know that David also does a lot of other work during the weekend, from running the Paddock Club hospitality to organising and managing all the trackside advertising.
He’s a busy man (and a jolly nice one), so I suppose he might need an extra stormtrooper to assist him from time to time if you’re really that keen.
