At first, I had real time for CH. Recently, though - he's been talking tosh quite a bit. Todays Autosport article is particularly silly though:

Horner has made no secret of the fact that he believes the Renault is down on power compared to the benchmark Mercedes-Benz - even though his unit may have advantages in terms of weight, driveability and fuel consumption.

A push last season to make all engines equal did not result in any action being taken, and Horner is now keen for the matter to be looked at again – especially as he believes the importance of power will become more important as rival outfits close in on the chassis advantage that Red Bull currently enjoys.

"I think if you look at basic studies you would say we are about three per cent down on power – which is probably about 30-35bhp," said Horner. "That is as much as four tenths per lap, but until you run all the engines in the same conditions on a dyno and do a fair and proper comparison you can never be sure.
So, Christian. You admit that you have a better engine in all terms, except that you want more power, like the bigger, heavier Merc lump. Does this mean you also want to make your engine biger and heavier, lessdrivable, and more thirsty as part of this eqalisation process? Oh, thought not.

Where would the fun be if all the cars were using the same spec'd engines.

I thought the Renault had been allowed to improve their engines last year to match the others.

So is he after more than equality?

I am getting fed up with his non sense. The engine is light, compact and frugal. The car is doing fine, and the compact engine has no doubt aided design. There car was quickest in the straights at Valencia and seems fine to power the works teams to good results.

Stop slagging off the hand that feeds you Red Bull.

you can modify the engines on the grounds of reliability can you not? If that reliability mod also makes it faster then thats just fine...

He hints that the V8's are pushing 1000bhp, is that right? eek

I guess that shows how completely out of touch with reality he is.

I think what RedBull/Horner is worried about, is that they essentially didn't capitalize on their huge advantage earlier in the season and now that the rest of the teams are catching up, they will have it even more difficult to the end of the season.

This is what REALLY pisses me off about the engine freeze. It has lead to a real attitude of whinging about fairness when another manufacturer simply does a better job with the engine.

'Please Sir he did a better job of it than me, it's not fair'!

Horner made his choice so bloody well live with. Not like the car is slow anyway is it!

How come 2 teams equipped with the "much better" Merc angine are way behind the Red Bulls? Surely Merc & Force India should be demanding access to Adrian Newey?

Right ho Mr. Horner, we'll give you the option to equalise your engine, providing you give all the other teams access to your car designs so that they can go about equalising all the chassis. What's that, it wouldn't be fair! Well, you pay your money and you make your choice. I didn't hear you whingeing earlier in the season when your car was patently faster than everyone else's.

This rings true. It seems whenever McLaren has won or done well Horner has reeled off the story about engines blah blah blah. If he's saying that now maybe they're not confident about Silverstone where Macca are probably going to go all out?

If CH wants a equalised engine and the FIA/FOTA agree to such a proposal then what happens if it backfires. RBR get an engine equal on power/torque, the competition get an engine with their current power/torque and the ability to package it better and then the RBR's Renault engine suffers reliability problems? Again he/or another team would call for 'engine equalisation'.

It also seems to be a rather pointless argument, next year they are returning KERS. Now the power output of the 2011 KERS system will be the same as the 2009 system (circa 80bhp) and potentially a better storage of power so tracks where the energy recovery is limited they can still utilise the extra power. Designing a good system, with the current engines, packages and the like would be more beneficial, and cheaper than opening up the homologation to amend the engines. Then in 2013 they are talking about changing the engines anyway to 1.5ltr turbo engines, so saving money now can help pay for the development on that engine.

And then every engine makes exactly the same power at the wheels for every car it's dropped into, yes? rolleyes

I'd have thought anyone on the technical side of F1 would be above this sort of stupidity.
