Vettel could learn a lot from Jarno!

Sorry if this should be posted in another thread (mods feel free to merge)

but in light of the Silverstone front wing controversy, it just got me thinking. Couldn't have Sebastian Vettel vetoed getting Webbers front wing and saved the team from an awful lot of controversy and bad feeling?

It just reminded me of an incident back in June this year when Jarno Trulli initially turned down a new chassis (despite struggling with his own) as it had initially been earmarked for Heikki Kovalainen and he didn't want Heikki to feel that the team was favouring him. In the end Jarno got the new chassis because Heikki realised how much he was struggling and was quite happy for him to have it anyway (story autosport.com - 18June). I realise that the Lotus guys haven't got the pressure of fighting for a world title but even so they must still be under personal pressure to beat each other and I thought it was a class act and one Mr Vettel could learn a lot from.

I hadn't heard that one, but in this case, then yes, he could have fixed his relationship with webber in one easy move by offering the wing back to Webber as a gesture of good faith.

I thought this too but Vettel seems to be all about one person - Vettel.

To be fair to Vettel you wouldn't expect him to give an advantage to his main rival. Like the OP said it's a different situation to the Lotus example as they're both title rivals. The mistake here was Christian Horner's, because if he thought that this wouldn't be perceived as favouritism he got it badly wrong. All it did was fire up Webber and turn the non-German speaking workd against their apparent lead driver.

Your comparing apples to oranges, I very much doubt Jarno would have done the same thing were the Lotuses fighting for the title. Racing drivers are generally fairly selfish creatures, they have to be to get the job done at that level - the difference in the Lotus situation is that the best way for the Lotus drivers to be moving up the grid is if the team works together.
