I defended Alonso and Ferrari for taking a chance on the stewards not penalising his move. However, hearing that Charlie informed them immediately that his recommendation (even though it's not binding on the stewards of course) was to concede the place means they must have known their gamble had little chance of success. The percentage move was to get back behind Kubica and have another go.
I wonder if they were so worried about how Alonso would react to being told he had made another mistake that it paralysed the team in those crucial moments when not much time would be lost, and henceforth Kubica's falling pace backed them into a corner where they felt they had to see the gamble out.

Jeez. No wonder, Alonso completely 'accepted' the penalty in the press. 
If i remember correctly, Alonso didn't complain himself after the race about the penalty?
If that is correct, then he was probably pissed at the managements decision to either;
a) Not tell him about Charlie's recommendation in the first place
or
b) Tell him that they are going to ignore Charlie's decision because they'll sort it out with a steward's enquiry
If b) then Alonso has to trust his boss that it's the correct course of action, if a) his face would match his overalls.

Alonso knows the rules. Even Hamilton not long from being a rookie in Spa 2008 knew the rules. Ok whether he interpreted them correctly of fairly will be argued forever, but he knew he had to rescind the position.
I still blame the politically correct circuits. A nice gravel trap or wall would've made things far more obvious for both drivers.
