Alonso letting Spain down?

Spain winning the world cup
Contador in with a shot of winning the tour de france
Jorge Lorenzo surely to take the moto gp title.

Seems like the missing link here is Alonso, what a shame!

Would that be double world champion Fernando Alonso? I fail to see your point. Maybe if Massa was strolling to the championship I could understand, but I doubt many drivers could campaign this years Ferrari as well as Alonso. Certainly he's made mistakes, we all do, we're human, but the last 2 races aside I think he's done ok this year.

Alonso won the first race of the season and should, certainly for a double WDC as you note, be doing more than "ok" so far

He has thrown his toys out of the pram more than once and has let his emotions run far too close to the surface, with some unacceptible outbursts as the consequence. Sure, he is passionate, and yes, he is undoubtedly a good driver, but he hasnt delivered

I wouldnt go so far as to say he letting his country down, but he has certainly let himself down on occasion so far this season

His behaviour over the whole safety car thing showed yet again how poisonous he is. He was more concerned with trying to ruin Lewis's race than driving his own. I bet Ferrari regret hiring him.

I'm just talking about results he's ground out, he's beaten Massa pretty consitently and thats the only real measure we have. But I'll agree he has made some silly mistakes and shown himself to be bitter and lacking in maturity when things aren't going his way.

The FIA are the good guys now? or does that depend if they penalise someone you like or not? Also Mr Hamilton has laid into his team over the radio on a couple of occasions.

How one acts away from the physical driving of your car across the finish line to collect the points has no bearing on whether or not you are the World Champion.
What the world thinks of you as a team player or not is irrelevent to your pursuit of winning. The only argument there to make is whether you lack of being a team player harms your pursuit of winning in general.

Alsono is responsible only to himself. Currently he is harming his racing ability by being mentally fragile. That is the only relevent thing.

If you are an international sports star, and one that has won a prestigious title, i do think you do have an obligation to people other than yourself, as a role model, or an ambassador for your team or your sport.

We arent talking about Alonso winning here - he can, he has and I respect his desire and passion to do so. I would love to see him start challenging again and give Hamilton a real battle, but, truth is, recently, he has been getting far too wound up and his performance is suffering accordingly
