Top Gear Senna

+1 very well made piece, should help explain Senna to the younger generations that may not have seen him race.
On an aside, would love to see the real lap times of Cruise & Diaz! Thought t was funny that the two biggest stars they have on get the fastest times... I could of course be wrong!

It helped explain Senna's constant dancing car to me (which I always thought was no grip). Cruise I know likes his cars a lot and I guess they've both had stunt training... Did seem odd but nonetheless best TG episode for a long time!On an aside, would love to see the real lap times of Cruise & Diaz! Superb TG episode. They just keep getting better and I was engrossed. I needed a p!ss bigtime and really had to go, but then they brought on the Senna part. No skipping for that. I now have cramps in my bladder!
Did annoy me slightly that they mixed up his excuse for that 1990 incident with interviews from earlier in his career. That's not really how it was. And that Clarkson said Senna never had a bad race. Not true, he had a few - Oz 1985, Spain 1989, 1992 spring to mind, but no-one is perfect. Hats off to Clarkson for saying he thought the best driver was Gilles though. Not a bad choice for a guy who's a bit of a childish k-nob...

It was staggeringly good. I am so glad Top Gear still hasn't forgotten that its got all things motoring related at heart. I was only four years old when Senna died, but even so I've wasted hours of time watching clips on youtube, and his car control was out of this world. Excellent tribute to a fantastic driver.

Yes, good piece. Shame Clarkson can't get his facts right though - saying the MP4/4 had 1200bhp; anyone with even a passing interest of the turbo era would not make that mistake.
It's a small fact IMO, the main reason I believe was down to a lowered pressure? I'm sure the Honda was actually capable of 1200BHP...Bugeyeandy said:
Isn't 1200bhp about right for quali boost settings? 800 or so for race spec?
They lowered it for '88 (as well as fuel allowances) because the turbo's were running away with it and FISA was trying to shift the balance to the NA engines as much as possible, didn't work out overly well either was because IIRC every race that year was won by a turbo car!Edited by PabloTeK on Sunday 25th July 21:48

Love to see more footage, got to say the MP4/4 is my all time favourite f1 car
I read an interview with Patrick Head once where he said that Williams once asked Honda how much power their engine had, to which Honda answered that they didn't know because their dyno only went up to 1000bhp, which it made wen it was at least 3000rpm short of what they revved the engnes in the car to. By the time the Hondas were in the McLarens they had popoff valves that supposedly linited manifold pressure to give about 800bhp, but Honda had theirs sited in a carefully controlled low pressure area in the inlet plenum, so that the pop-off valve never saw peak boost. The point Clarkson was making was that it undoubtedly made for a pretty rude amount of power (and torque) to be controlling one-handed on a qualifying lap at Monaco.
