“The powerful heart of the racing car is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged engine from BMW Motorsport. The car complies with the new Super2000 regulations put in place by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), which stipulate the use of turbo engines with 1,600 cc displacement and four-wheel drive combined with an increased emphasis on road relevant technologies.”
That’s 4WD, with a 1.6l turbo engine.
From what I can find online of the S2000 rules, 4WD is permitted in rallying. It’s only in touring cars that they restrict cars to 2WD. It also looks like turbocharging isn’t allowed though, so something is still amiss.
The Mini is scheduled to run a few races in 2011 and then enter the full 2012 season. Could that timescale be anything to do with a change in rules?

The 2011 WRC spec was changed from 2.0 litre NA to 1.6 Turbo at a WMSC meeting in June. Transmission is S2000 (4WD) as are Electronics. They will also be allowed additional Aerodynamic bits n bobs. There will also be a WRC "Cup" for S2000 cars.
S2000 as in the IRC, stays as it is now AFAIK.

Errrm, current WRC cars are not normally aspirated. They are 2 litre turbo.Forums | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
