Call me funny, but aren't all the close-up pics of the H16 not a V16? All the inlets are pointing sideways in a flat config not a V? :s
Quite right. The V16 was a large front-engined car of the early 1950s not the mid-engined sleek machine shown in the pictures from 1966/67. Still a great sound clip of the V16, though.
An old-time mechanic who had worked for BRM told me the main problem with the V16 was the use of a centrifugal supercharger rather than a Rootes supercharger as the former assumed more constant revving (which is why it worked well in fighter planes) rather than the constantly changing revs of a GP car. He also said that, because the V16 was only 1.5 litres, the pistons and cylinders were tiny.
Isn't that grabbed off the cd you get free from nick masons into the red book?
If you haven't already got it it's not a bad read, & they recorded all the engine noises for all the cars featured- v16,d type, type 35,250 gto,bblm,935 & 962s etc etc think there was about 10 cars spanning the history of motorsport.

The pictures have precious little to do with the sound.
The pictures are mainly of the 1966 H16 BRM, which was 3 litre, normally aspirated.
The sound is of the early 1950s Supercharged V16.
The only thing they had in common is the fact that they were pretty useless.
I am pretty sure the sound track is from the CD which came with Nick Mason's "Into the Red" book.

you're not wrong Eric.It took the genius of Jim Clark, Colin Chapman and Maurice Phillipe to get the BRM engine a win.
It was the 1966 USGP at Watkins Glen. The same car and engine was used in practice in Mexico for the next race with no work having been done to the car apart from a clean and spanner check. The engine lasted 2 laps before blowing up, destroying the internals. It was a close run thing!

Is the book worth it?
I have seen it before, but I wasn't sure as it could be more about the man and less about the cars. Which would be the wrong way around for me.
It's not about Mason at all really. There is a little side-column in each entry about the history of the car, whom he bought it from, where he's raced it et cetera but most of the text is written by Mark Hales about the driving experience.I have seen it before, but I wasn't sure as it could be more about the man and less about the cars. Which would be the wrong way around for me.
If you're a bit of a geek like me it doesn't go into as much detail as you might like, but I'd still say it's worth it.

If you want to know what it's like to blat a Bugatti Type 35, A Porsche 956 or Gilles Villeneuve's F1 Ferrari around Silverstone, this book tells you - 22 cars in total I think.

I have seen the H16 in action at the Oulton park gold cup.
Those were the days.
