try reading the summary on their website - although it doesn't actually provide exact details of 'win F1 race = x points, win Indycar race = B' but theory is there. wins, pole, qualifying etc all contribute to scores....as to why the crashy/finger man is at No 1? It is a rolling average, so he had a better late '09 + early/mid '10 than anyone else

What would be wrong with (whatever the field size) points for a win, down to 1 point for last place.
1 point per position gained on track.
1 point for fastest lap.
+10 points if it is F1
+9 Points if it is IRL or Le Mans LMP1
+8 points if it is NASCAR, LMP2 or GP2
+7 points if it is Formula Nippon or GT1
+6 points if it is GP3, Aussie V8s, F2, or GT2
+5 points if it is F3
And on like that. At least you could have a set start point rather than

What doesn't make sense is that from last week to this week Vettel increased his points gap over Hamilton. Yet, as far as I can remember, Lewis did slightly better in the last race than Seb both in qually and in finishing position.
Yup, its a bit like tennis rankings whereby if they do well last year and top the rankings, they have to do equally well this year to defend all those points, otherwise they'll drop.
Thats why Button is relatively low compared to those around him in the championship, because he won 6 of the first 7 races in 2009 so every time he didn't finish first this year, he lost points, whereas for someone like Hamilton who had a poor start to 2009 due to a dog of a car, could finish anywhere in the points and still gain ranking points, hence why you get people going up/down in contradiction to their actual placings in the race.
As mentioned previously, all a load of old bks really, its verging on meaningless.
