t comment? I've seen that! Couldn't comment whether Brundle is better obviously, but he's certainly invaluble to the current format.

I read that he did want to sit down and straighten it out with Patrese but he wasn't having any of it.It was James Hunt‘s campaigns of 76 & 77 that first really attracted me to F1, the fact that the BBC started to televise the whole race then really cemented my obsession. Before then, you were stuck with delayed reports in Motorsport and newspapers.
James Hunt was genuinely charismatic and he Barry Sheen easily held high public esteem, much as Lewis and Jensen do now.
He was obviously a very complex guy, from tennis player to budgerigar collector; playboy to alcoholic, but he was very special.
His TV commentaries were the perfect foil to Murray Walker’s “enthusiast’s” approach; to listen to someone who had actually “been there” was completely new, the fact that he said outrageous things that would not normally be said on the BBC at that time was even better. However, I completely agree with Stack and the Patrese thing.
Brundle is the perfect man for TV now and I seriously doubt that he will be bettered, but at the time, before Gordon Ramsey rants became the norm, James Hunt was brilliant.

I read a recent Patrese article , by Nigel Roebuck I think & it is totally the other way round Patrese is a pretty laid back Guy ....
On the BBC red button coverage of old Italian GPs recently, they showed the '91 race. Senna was leading but being hassled by Mansell and Patrese in the Williams, both of whom could have been going faster. Mansell lets Patrese through to have a pop at Senna and he gets through to the lead, only to spin out a couple of laps later.
Anyway the point of all this is that Hunt was quite dismissive of Patrese spinning out in the lead, but later in the race it transpires that it was down to a gearbox fault and Hunt was then quite magnanimous, apologising and admitting his error.
I always think that Hunt and Keith Floyd were seperated at birth.

In no way, shape or form is that the case! The Murray Walker/James Hunt combination was the ultimate, adding humour, interest and down to earth conversation!! televised F1 has never been the same since!!ginettajoe said:

His problem is that he has not had a good quality commentator alongside him.

Don't agree there, though the science of broadcasting and commentating has come on a couple generations since Hunt's time."Commentary" isn't a science. It's a skill.
I'm not saying Hunt was bad. Far from it. But I prefer Brundle.
In fact, back in the 80s and early 90s, Brundle did actually step in when Hunt wasn't available (and Brundle was in one of his driverless spell) and he was good then too - using the same technology as Hunt.
