Classic rallying: What papers does the car need?

Just out of interest really, but at what level does your car start to need FIA papers and the like to compete in classic events? I'm thinking navigational-style road rallies rather than stage rallying, but I know some events still require papers. Is that only prestigious high-end stuff or would it be an issue for more affordable events too?

It's more higher end prestige stuff as you say, in my experience anyway, not many Road Rally/12 Car/Nav event cars even have MSA logbooks as it's just not really needed.

Talk to your local Club, or the Club that is organising any event you're interested in. You'll get more accurate info from them than you will on here

True, but I don't have a specific event in mind. Basically the reason I ask is two-fold:

Primarily it's because we're in the process of getting my dad's Healey Silverstone back on the road. It's 100% original with documented 1950s race history so it would be eligible for just about any race/rally event we could afford to have a go at. The thing is the process of getting (and maintaining) FIA papers for it sounds complicated and rather expensive; I was wondering how far we could get without them. I know the historic Mille Miglia, for example, requires them, even though it's more of a road run.

Secondly, on a more whimsical note, I'm also looking into getting a new toy for myself. Although it'd be something rather less exotic, a retro coupe like an Alfa 1750GTV or a Volvo Amazon is a vague option, and it occured to me it might be fun to have a go at historic rallying. That would be at a much lower level, but again it's a question of how far I could go on a casual basis before I started to need papers, certified safety equipment etc.
