So it seems Adrian Newey has been busy working for Polyphony Digital, to create the Red Bull X1 for GT5...

I can see some major improvments over current formula cars, but is this really the design direction everybody would take if the design rules were completely freed up?
Would there be benefits in closing over the suspension, making a super LMP style car?
Or would the student Newey's design I saw a couple of years ago be better? (Looked like a armadillo, for high downforce low drag)
In other words, if CanAm came around again, what would people be driving?

Simply closing it over (like an 80's Group C Prototype) creates a large frontal area which isn't too great either. A modern LMP is pretty much a halfway house between Group C and F1, so the design direction is certainly heading towards Newey's concept anyway.Jungles said:

Newey was at Williams when they made their CVT car. I imagine that the turbine would be run at a constant speed eliminating lag.Jungles said:

The Howmet TX gas turbine car addressed this back in the 60's:"The TS325 engine comprised a two-stage gas generating turbine driving the two-stage compressor while also providing gas to the power turbine whose output shaft, via reduction gearing, drove the rear wheels. Heppenstall's solution to the turbine lag was to insert a wastegate bet ween the gas-generating and the power turbines. The first third of throttle pedal movement controlled fuel supply to the combustion chambers, and thus the speed of the engine. But once spinning at its maximum 57,500 rpm and delivering full power, the final two-thirds throttle movement activated the wastegate, thus controlling the amount of gas directed to the power turbine, and hence the rear wheels."
