Formula One drivers are well-versed in the use of extreme measures in the pursuit of speed but Fernando Alonso, the 2010 championship leader, has taken things a stride further by having his legs waxed...

Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 champion, said tonight: "I'm surprised how he was able to take the pain of having his legs waxed. We noticed as we were walking in. Mark [Webber] pointed it out and was asking: 'How far has it gone up?' I was like: 'Wow, they are shiny.'

Probably done to stay cooler while racing,I shaved my legs once as a dare by my wife. The amount the hair insulates is quite amazing.

I believe that as with professional cyclists, it makes physiotherapy massage easier.

I did it as a cyclist. It's not that uncommon...

Lewis is just a bit too fashion conscious, but he's getting there.

Not surprising though. Although if I was him, I'd probably settle for shaving, rather than waxing!

Yep. As of last summer it's now a tactic to wax the chest - easier sleeping!

quite right - it's bloody painful having physio when they're ripping the hairs out - but still funny smile
