From what I recall the BMWs ran normal gearboxes instead of added weight as a penalty for rear wheel drive. When the RAC BMWs from the BTCC entered the Brands Hatch round last year with semiautomatic boxes they were not awarded any points. Perhaps Daewoolet have pointed to that and said why?
If BMW used semiauto boxes with the extra weight penalty then I see no reason to exclude them.
But then maybe the FIA are trying to get some media exposure for a largely ignored series, or punishment for BMW for going DTM next year and taking their best drivers with them.

That really doesn't look good at all.
From what I have seen it was a bit (okay very) naughty to do what they did, but importantly it was within the rules at the time of the 'offence'. To my mind it is akin to what Maclaren did with LH when they under-fuelled him.
Obviously I don't have all the facts but on the face this is a very bad move and if I were BMW I would be sticking 2 fingers now and looking at diverting my money to the SuperGT/DTM and ICLMS programmes.

This all came about because of Alex Zanardi, BMW were given a reprieve to use this gearbox for a 30kg weight drop iirc for him, and a team used it a few months back with no punishment, so BMW took took the decision to use it in Japan, where they done quite well. Although this could partially be down to the wet weather.
Then the FIA changed their minds and told BMW no you can't do that and just took the points away that they won for the weekend. Great decision making there. Ruined a championship fight good and proper.
