Monte Carlo Rally

Right thinking of going to this next year.

Anyone done it before? Is flying to Nice then hireing a car the best bet? Wheres best to stay? Cheap and cheerful is fine.

Any other hints/tips etc?

Will follow this topic with interest. I investigated it and decided it was just a bit too hard for me given the distances and time involved between the 2 centres and the places that cheap flights dump you.

Last time I went we flew into Nice, picked up a hire car and headed to hotel in Menton.

Menton is just outside Monte Carlo and hotel was in walking distance to train station so we could easily soak up the evening atmosphere, service park, dinner etc, in Monte

Also dead easy to get on to the Col du Turini stage from there but we had to leave the hotel very early before the road was closed. The top is raved about for it's atmosphere but in my view it isn't worth the hassle - too many people and the views are better by parking your car inside one of the hairpins on the way up and walking a bit from there.

Use google satellites and michelin maps to find a good location to head for on your chosen stage before you go and you'll be rewarded by views of the cars for several minutes coming up the hill. Would post some pics but that was the weekend my camera packed in

Ah Superb, so once you were there was that it until the stage opens? So you are there all day once the road is shut?

Whats the snow like? Are the side roads impassable?

I was thinking of doing the same thing. A best mate has a flat (invetment/rents out) and his OH's family are from Menton, so was thinking of getting the keys off him (in trade for wine no doubt - doesn't get bookied during winter much), having a few day of sunshine to perk me up in the middle of winter, and visit a few stages one day.

When I went ot Nice a year or so ago, we went to Monaco on the train. Nice & easy.
