Going back to Bridge?

Had a quick butchers and couldnt find anything on the forums about this.

I am currently setting up my Outlook diary for the 2011 seasons, F1, GT1, LMS, ALMS, ILMC, BTCC, WTCC AussieV8 the list goes on!

Going through the races on formula1.com, and the circuit diagram for the British GP is the Bridge GP circuit! Does this mean they have ditched that middle bit and gone for the, IMO better, older layout???

Can’t use the bridge circuit with the new pits complex – That really would be a waste of money!

Why not?? New pits complex is on the Abbey straight, after Club. No reason why they cant use that and run left at Abbey chicane instead of right.

Pit exit runs into the new section (abbey right hander)
If they tried running it onto the Bridge Circuit, it would end up on the racing line.

Only if you left Abbey unchanged or didn't go with the 'old' version of Abbey the Histerics use.

As to the Track plan I can assure you that the 'Arrowhead' version will be the one in use for the next GP.

Dont you think there would have been some sort of press release or story in the motoring press if they were going back to the Bridge circuit?

I prefer the new layout. There were some good passing moves, notably Vettel, Sutil and Rosberg, and the new Abbey is spectacular.

Im not saying Arena is a bad circuit. Its just that its changes for changes sake. The Bridge circuit was fine as it was.

Having been on the new pit wall as a marshal for the 24hr this year, I can't see the Bridge GP circuit being practical. IIRC the new pitlane spits them out after Abbey on the new circuit due to the fact that there's quite a drop between the track and the pit lane! That's what I could decipher from looking at it on a break.

The Silverstone Classic used the tighter version of Abbey this year. The GP (pre 2010) version.

Interesting. I have to say that whilst I have still been able to keep my finger on the 'big' issues this is the first year I haven't been to Silverstone (mainly due to clashing races elswhere in the World) in my 34 years so am not 'uptodate' on all of the details.

Certainly from what I can recall I would be possible to use the new pits and the Bridge layout, but it would require a lot of work, to the point where using the 'old' pits would be the only real solution.

Once youve done this, can you write an iphone app that holds all this, so that you can put dates and a location in and it shows you all the nearest events around that time at that place?

And add Bike racing too?

Im waiting for someone to do this.

To use the Bridge circuit with the new pits would be very difficult from what I've seen, though I confess that the last time I was there was September. The new Abbey is magnificent and watching Alexander Sims dancing through there in the very soggy British F3 race there was awesome (see below). It is also possible to overtake there, even in downforce cars, as Ant Davidson so eloquently illustrated with that monumental pass on Allan McNish in the LMS. I believe the new pit exit is where the macadam is joining the circuit below. As you can see, it would involve having to create a switchback, which would have the pit exit traffic joining at Abbey, which doesn't seem safe or sane to me - it being a major overtaking spot and featuring a fast exit with zero run-off. The Silverstone Classic used the Bridge layout and very good it was too, but I do wonder whether this will continue. Part of the attraction of the event is the sprawling paddock area and using the new pits would negate that. On that basis, I wonder if they will use the new GP circuit, but with the old pits/paddock. However, the benefit of the Bridge layout is that it also allows the Wellington Straight to be used for displays, rally demos and collecting the grids together in good time. Only time (and the BRDC) will tell...
