HRT confirms FOTA split
"HRT has confirmed that it is no longer a part of the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) - after claiming the organisation only serves the interests of the leading outfits."
but then read on.
"The exact circumstances of its departure are unclear, however. Sources suggest that back in December, HRT was suspended from the organisation because it had not paid its €100,000 yearly fee."
I think I tend to believe the latter

Probably both explanations are true. 36.3 During Q1, any driver whose best qualifying lap exceeds 107% of the fastest time set during that session will not be allowed to take part in the race. Under exceptional circumstances however, which may include setting a suitable lap time in a free practice session, the stewards may permit the car to start the race.
Especially if one of the front teams have built something ground breaking - with the new regs and tyres, I can only see HRT going backwards.
Given the 2011 fixed weight distribution, would a 2010 chassis even be viable?

Perhaps the point when the Arab buyout of STR is announced?...is there such a thing as a "cheap" entry though?....What I meant to say was the only way to get an entry (for 2011)

According to them they are using the Toyota TF110 designs, with amendments made to suit the 2011 regs/williams gearbox by Geoff Willis. They claim the car is being made in Germany (where Kolles has his DTM team) and England (dunno where).
They are very vague about what exactly is going on. Willis worked as a consultant for them in 2010, he apparently joined the team as technical director in March, by mid April rumours were surfacing that he was going to quit. Nothing has been announced either way, in some articles he is TD, in others he is working as a consultant. Kolles recently said that the car is being built around the designs that Willis did.
All this tells me that 100k is alot of money to Kolles right now and he's opted not to pay it. I don't believe all the crap he says, I think they are in trouble.

FOTA is basically just a fancy Gentleman's club isn't it? You pay to be in this club that imposes more rules on itself. It's not backed or supported by the FIA at all is it?

To me its a mystery how HRT are still functioning, with all the talk of not paying bills, the poor performance and the endless driver merry go-round last year they are IMO changing status from "struggling minnows" to "outright joke". I'm all for the smaller teams having a go at F1 and I think the likes of Virgin and Lotus (not the Renault one) are doing a cracking job in difficult times. I'm just getting to the point where I can't take anything HRT do/say seriously.
I see it more of a sportsmanship thing.
The backmarkers should be a platform for young drivers to get into F1 – yet HRT are so desperate for money their race seats are fought over by a series of old pay drivers!
They are not contributing anything.

then they should not really be be the grid.
