It was a good effort but he missed the last cone!
http://www.youtube.com/user/Avtovaz21057#p/u/0/-u0...I have a recollection of attending an RAC Special Stage at Oulton when I was a nipper - probably 1990-ish. I can recall the Sapphire Cosworths there. It was after school and it was dark; that's about the sum total of my memory of the event. Anyone help me out?!
Also - there was a service area at the Northgate Arena in Chester. Anyone else attend that? Was great when the RAC came to town. Can still remember going straight from school to Chester racecourse in 1995 when Colin won the title and the celebrations down there.

It may have been at Oulton in other years, but in 1992 I was there
- I had to look up my photos to check!. I went to the Sutton Park Stage in the morning and OP in the afternoon- this was still in the days when the RAC resembled a 'Rally of GB' and not the travesty it has now become- I remember getting to three different stages in North Wales on the next day.Getting back to Oulton, I can remember it being wet.... very wet. By the time I got there it was a case of being selective where you parked as the car park (i.e. infield) resembled a lake in places. Watched the Classic RAC go through (Lotus Cortinas
), many of whom has similar problems to the guys on the posted video. The main guys came through after dark and the 4WD (Integrales, Celicas, Cossies and Colin Mac in the Legacy) seemed so undramatic in comparison!.Loved the posted vid- thanks for dredging up memories of all the classic rally cars of my youth- Escorts, Chevettes, Sunbeams and lovely Mantas- awesome!

Sure it was 1990 not 1980?
The types of cars and lack of much signwriting makes it look older to me.
Definately is, it's just a club event which is why the cars are pretty low key afairs. The types of cars and lack of much signwriting makes it look older to me.
The Oulton tarmac rallies were a lot of fun, there used to be a few 8R4's running at these events (6R4 with a rover v8 fitted), one of the best to watch was Jon Ingram in his 240RS, he could pedal.

Yep, i once popped to Oulton before heading for the forest's for 5 days, back when the RAC was a proper rally and adventure for the bobble hatted fans like me. I've got plenty of photos from that era. Also - there was a service area at the Northgate Arena in Chester. Anyone else attend that? Was great when the RAC came to town. I stopped breifly at chester service, most of the time we were on route to another stage and didnt get chance to go, i once drove through the kielder service when we took a wrong slot.
I was also at chester when Colin picked up the trophy, watched him come over the tops into sweet lamb then shot up the road to chester racecourse for the finish, great days those were!Nice find, really enjoyed both parts of the Oulton video, highly amusing in parts, love the variety of cars and it takes me straight back to my youth. The relative lack of safety kit is amusing, there is a moment were one of the cars hits the tyres and the Nav hops out to reveal that he's kitted out in jeans and a jumper, none of this Nomex malarkey!
