Curcuits to change to get more passing..... WTF???

Basic view is that the FIA is looking into how to make passing easier on curcuits. Lots of straights followed by hairpin corners..... So, something like this then:

What a joke!

the only one i don't mind is monaco.
Really? You dislike Spa Francorchamps, Silverstone, Suzuka? What you need is a long fast challenging corner (5th or 6th gear not flat out), followed by a straight and then a hairpin. The fast corner allows for some differential in performance/bravery where the following car can get on the throttle a fraction of a secong earlier, the long straight allows them to close up and finally outbrake.
Something like the lead up to the hairpin at Magny Cours. Unfortunately Mangy Cours wasn't a great circuit because the rest it completely sucked - it was all chicanes.

I would have thought that a fast corner is not what you want onto a straight as the car behind cant get close because of the turbulence and therefore lack of downforce. What you want is slow/medium onto a straight into slow/medium corner. Something like the lead up to the hairpin at Magny Cours. Surely what you need is corners that open up on exit so the following car can take a different line like with some of the corners at Montreal.
You look at valencia the sharp right hander after the bridge onto the long back straight means that the following car has to wait for the other to get on the power and so create a gap that prevents a chance of over taking.

Of course this only really works if there is some penalty for running wide on the fast corner, some kind of obstacle that will seriously slow you down like a corn field or a pit of angry snakes. Which is why this doesn't work on most of the modern circuits. There has to be some element of "if i get on the throttle too early i probably won't finish the race" - not "if I get on the throttle too early I might go onto some other tarmac and I still might be able to defend my position anyway".Something like the lead up to the hairpin at Magny Cours. That would be a great idea. I would suggest painted run off areas so there is slightly less grip but the safety police would say thats dangerous. If the technology was available, a system where if a car was to run with wheels outside the track limit, the engine would be limited for the period outside the lines. Cragglea1 said:

IIRC Paul Ricard has a super abrasive ribbon around part of the run off that destroys tyres if you run over it. No not stinger stylee, but enough to require you to change them if you don't want to be 5 seconds off the pace. Why don't we just mandate that all tracks have to have a strip of this 1 meter away from the kerb where possible? That would prevent the problem with drivers running silly wide yet still not losing more than a tenth or two, if that.Forums | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
