good books on the nuts and bolts of motor racing?

I'm looking for a good book on motor racing – not just on driver technique, but also dealing with the technical elements of a track car, eg camber, castor, front vs rear-wheel drive, diffs, suspension etc. The physics of track driving I suppose is basically what I'm after.
Taruffi's book still gets lots of praise, and I will most likely get it, but I'd also like something more modern that takes more recent engineering developments into account. Any and all recommendations gratefully received. Thanks.

The Carroll Smith books have much good stuff in them, although his writing style is quite tedious, and the books do not have indices, which is inexcusable for a technical manual.
The other thing is that some of his assertions have subsequently been called into question by people who know a hell of a lot more about the subjects than I ever shall.
I'm not trying to put you off the books, but they were written quite awhile ago, and are perhaps now living off their reputation to some extent.
IMO, the Paul Van Valkenburgh book addresses the same sort of things from a similar perspective, but does it better:

I like the look of the chapter theming of Van Valkenburgh's book. £113 for a used one on amazon UK, and under $13 for the same book on amazon US.
