F1 Betting Odds
Discussion
It really does pay to shop around the on-line bookies and explore the large range of various types of bets on offer.
I'm partial to the occasional long shot for the Championship or individual race. I've noticed that sometimes it is better not to bet each way on your long shot, but win only and also a seperate bet for a podium.
For example; I've done this recently by backing my hunch @ 12-1 WIN only and getting a Podium bet @ 3-1 with another bookie for the same driver. Had I bet each way 12-1 @ 1/5th the odds for the place, the place odds would be 12-5! That's two and two fifths to one ( 2.4-1 ) for a place 1-2-3 which is rather less than 3-1 bet for a podium finish ~ same thing but, better odds.
Keep 'em peeled ...
Been a long wait ... too long.

an each way on him.
I might do. However, pre-season 'form' is mostly an unknown quantity and this season is no exception. In fact less clear than previous seasons' mysteries for this observer... Plus the cancelled first event has clouded the issues further....
Because of that,I will certainly wait until after the first race is run or even the first two races before having a serious bet on the Championship. Two races should see patterns forming to give us all a better idea.
I'm tempted with a bet on Button for a match with his team mate over the season and in some races too as after one season's experience now behind him within the McLaren team, they could be a closer than last year. Button's odds are far more attractive in the match and with Lewis's penchant for the occasional off... who knows.
I do have a hunch that the "old man of the track" will show better this season too. His preseason interviews shows a higher level of confidence which he did not show at all in 2010. In case anyone does not know what I'm on about ... Herr Schumacher...
.. Any signs of a good showing by the old geezer could prove to be a 'nice little earner' as a certain used car vendor used to say ...
..
Really looking forward to the action.

I think the smart money will be on top 6 finishers, with the likes of the Renaults, Torro Rossos and Saubers getting amongst the Mclarens and Mercs, who are likely to be behind Red Bull and Ferrari based on the testing grapevine.
Being F1 though, the predicted form book will likely be turned on it's head, but I think this year more than most, there could well be a few surprise grids and podiums.
I've got a hunck on Buemi for Oz - he's gone well in previous years there and the TR is said to be good over a long run. A number of people have commented on them looking quick, despite the fact that they've not been topping the times in qually/glory runs.

I have just doomed Ferrari to a poor season after I backed Alonso to win the championship, at least he is not a horse as I have lost count of the number of grand national runners over the years that I have condemned to the great paddock in the sky.
I did exactly that this time last year. For that reason. It was a win, win situation for me. If my bet wins, I'll be a little richer. If it gets beat, not my favourite driver gets beaten. I'm a bit funny like that and it's surprising how often such a 'joke' bet pays off.
Put the "Bok" (...
.. ) on him summut shocking although I had to wait until the end of the season for it to do so...
I may even back him again but, only after a race or two when some 'form' should have emerged by then.
The Grand National is a race to watch and only have an occasional little financial interest in. Because it is a handicap, the best horses on the day do not always carry a "fair" weight and get beaten by inferior horses carrying less weight. Even the great Red Rum benefitted when winning his first Grand National by carrying much less weight when he beat Crisp into second place on the run to the winning post. For this reason, as a racing purist, I do not like handicaps even the Grand National. Much prefer the Cheltenham Gold Cup or the Derby where the horses all carry the same weight. Handicaps: A bit like letting the likes of Mclaren, Ferrari and Red Bull starting the race a minute after the green light for the slower cars... A handicap. It would make for interesting racing but, the best driver/car combination would rarely win.
Having said that, I have backed the Grand National winner several times over the years. The first was Jay Trump way back in the 1960s and several since. Jay Trump at 16-1, that paid for a few subsequent losers in the National...a race to watch rather than bet on unless the better horse has been treated reasonably by the handicapper.
Only a few days to go now before the "off"...

John I spent last week at the Cheltenham Festival was a great week, im a member there and it's really good value. On the 18-24 membership its £190, which entitles you to entry to every meeting of the year!
This years Gold Cup was Breathe taking, Long Run was class and deserves his victory. But boy is Denman game, just for a moment I thought he might pull it off, that would have been simply different class had he of managed it. Not long till Im off to the Guineas and then the Punchestown festival!!! Happy days! Now for a Horse racing fan thats not a bad week is it? Guineas at Newmarket Saturday/Sunday, then Fly out to Dublin Tuesday morning for 4 days of top class Irish Jumps racing!
As for the National this year, I've already nailed my colours to the mask... What A Friend for me, I have little luck in the National but he is over a stone well in, a solid jumper and likely to get his quick ground! (DONT BLAME ME IF HE LOSES THOUGH
)
I wasn't even nearlly born when Crisp got beat on the run in, but that was some effort!
Back to the F1, I've backed both Toro Rosso drivers EW to win...

I had one of my best Cheltenham Festivals ever. I also had far fewer bets this year as I did not have time to study form sufficiently. However, I know the form of the Gold Cup horses without needing to look at the stats. This years Gold Cup was Breathe taking, Long Run was class and deserves his victory. I backed Long Run early @ both 9-2 and later @ 7-2 on the day playing up my winnings on that same young horse from his previous impressive win in the delayed running of the King George.. Not only that, my other favourite Gold Cup horse, Denman who has never run worse than 2nd in all his Gold Cups, I had in a reverse forecast with Long Run. With a few fences still to jump, my selections were running only 4th and 5th with three very good horses in front of them...
By the last fence when most horses are tiring, the two of them jumped together and went on to finish 1st and 2nd well clear of those other good horses. The forecast paid 28-1 ! That lot will pay for a few losers. With races like the Gold Cup and Derby, the best horses usually win or get placed. That is not the case with the Grand National Handicap which is much more of a gamble. Even so, I'll have a small bet on the race ~ they sometimes pay off handsomely.
I shall be losing a bit of sleep in the early hours later tonight. Will keep a close eye on the Practice Form for the Australian GP...
Finally, Be lucky.
John sounds like you had a good week!
(Without this getting into a boasting comp), I had a great as well, as I go to each day I bet on every race... But I ended nearlly 3k up... Thanks to a rather nice treble (Junior - Centurary Handicap Chase, Quevega - MAres Hurdle, and Junior - Kim Muir)...
Agreed, I do enjoy the big handicaps but I do prefer the big Grade 1's, this years Derby could be pretty interesting... Was told that Aiden O'Briens Seville was quite well fancied at home... So I've already had a cheeky tenner on him. I would seriously advise a trip out to the Arc if you haven't been previously, €8 entry (unbelievably cheap)and last year was a great experiance... Will be going back this year! Hopefully cheering Maxios home!

Just checked one of the main on-line bookies for the odds on safety car deployment.
Here they are :~
Formula 1 - Safety Car (SC) Period During Race
Australian Grand Prix
Book Closes 26 Mar 04:00
Yes 1/4 No 11/4
Many previous F1 races the Yes/No SC odds are fairly even, around 5/6 each of the two..
Now those are very skinny odds for SC deployment down under. Appears Bookies think SC deployment is a near certainty. Time and again SC can upset the 'form' and true running of a race with bunching up processions when it goes on for so long, negating the good efforts of those drivers getting some useful space over the other competitors prior to the safety car. It all too frequnetly changes the result.
There were very strong winds during P1 and P2 and some rain towards the end. The weather could have the final say on the result come race day.
I mention this so that anyone considering having a hefty bet on any aspect of this race could have their judgement choice undermined or even negated by the SC. Bear that in mind before pressing the BET NOW button ....
I shall wait for qualifying at the earliest before pressing that button ...
... Be Lucky.

FYI:
X-Posted from the Aus-GP thread:~
5-2 looks good value for a podium.
Consider this. He is 8-1 and 9-1 respectively with those two Bookies to win the race. Each way 1/5th the odds a place 1-2-3. That's 8-5 and 9-5 for a podium! Both under 2-1 and well under 5-2 ( 2.5-1 )
So if you fancy Jenson to do well on Sunday, rather than bet each way 1-2-3, bet win only and take 5-2 for a podium which is the same as being placed 1-2 or 3 ...
Be lucky..
I'm having trouble keeping my peepers open at the moment ~ lack of sleep watching P1 and P2. I am determined to see P3 and qualifying live though ...
