I suspect it's test gear for measuring strain or deflection of the front wing.

RedBull had a similar device on theirs for testing last year, as has been said above it's for measuring how much it flexes.

it's actually a vessel for transporting small animals. Rodents, for the main part. Hamsters, gerbils and suchlike, nothing too big.
