Petrov's Steering Coloumn!
Discussion
I know the car went airbourne but should the steering column have broken like it did in this clip, approx 35secs in?

Are they not retained in some way to avoid puncture injuries?

I don;t think so Eric. You can see the column moving up and down with the wheel. Whatever holds the column in place near the driver, appears to have snapped off. Meaning petrov is supporting the wheel and steering column himself. He even turns the wheels a bit just as he's hitting the sign.

That's what I thought as well, I think it happened in a relatively good place, I wouldn't fancy that happening while skittling between the walls at Monaco.
Well, if it hadn't broken, the energy would have to go somewhere, so you'd probably looking at two broken wrists for the driver instead, given he was still holding the wheel.
I think some people seriously underestimate the amount of force in an impact like that, we've hit the bottom of the car on the floor over a few jumps before (admittedly perhaps a fair bit higher, but I'm not sat on the floor of a carbon tub either...) and even with a foot of suspension travel and padded seats to take the brunt it still results in simultaneous 'Ow, f
k!' shouts from both sides of the car and some serious bruising for a few days.

I did something very similar at the beginning of the back straight at Snett (according to the chaps following me, you could see air under all four wheels at the same time). It should be flat because if someone went spinning off there (which isn't exactly inconceivable), the accident would be a lot worse than it should be.

I agree they really should try and avoid "yumps" like that in the grass. In the aim of avoiding this kind of thing.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRC3rv1ZHj4

I'm not sure why Brundle made this comment;
"I've no idea why hes come back on the track there!!"
Surely from Petrovs seating position and the flat area he wen off on would reckon it was just flat, rather than some f
k off bump there.
He shouldn't have kept his foot in though really. Was asking for trouble bump or no bump."I've no idea why hes come back on the track there!!"

On a much sadder note bumpy in-fields
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tl-6oqN0i4&NR=...
Greg Moore's car probably started to roll because he bounced over the uneven in-field
on the other hand Richie Hearn spun off six laps earlier on exactly the same spot but didn't hit the same bumps and was unhurt the skid marks were the same as More's but he manged to stop the car....

In all fairness i doubt much could of helped him , it is a case of the edge of his tyres digging in and flipping him more than bumps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tl-6oqN0i4&NR=...
