Come Friday I'd have been working for far too many days in straight succession, and I'm toying with the idea just having a blast out somewhere. But I don't really know where to head to.

The situation would be:
leaving London in the evening/afternoon of Friday
returning Sunday
Car is either an old TVR Wedge or BMW e34.
I don't mind where, and happy to head abroad. Although I've been to the ring a few times and I'd like to try somewhere different.

Where would you go?

Possibly head out to the Cotswolds, I have been told there are some good roads there. Stay over in a B&B somewhere and then to Brecon Beacons for some driving fun?

I'd go to Antwerp, Ghent or Ostend.

But since the topic is roads, Wales.

Ok they talk funny, the food is err average and it's
nearly always raining, but the roads are quite good,
compared to the rest of the UK.

North Wales would be about 4 hours on a good run.

Book into a B & B in either Betws or Beddgelert (or, The Groes Inn - favourite haunt of EVO), and enjoy roads that are almost as good as the Highlands.

Straight upto the lakes. Head to Buttermere and set camp. Next day climb hellvelyn and walk striding edge. Come down to a steak dinner with guiness.
Next day walk up Skidaw. Apres walk in local pub. Sleep well under canvas.

I was massively disappointed by the Cotswolds. Very busy (up there with the likes of the Lake District for tourist crowds) and only a handful of good roads that I managed to find (I'm sure there are more).

Providing you go out of season Wales is fantastic. Starting from London, I'd nip down the M4, take the Usk road from Chepstow, then across the Brecon Beacons and maybe stay in the Beacons for the night or head up to the Elan Valley. Take the B roads up through Wales - I forget its name but there's one B-road that forms a fairly obvious route north along the backbone of Wales and it's great; quite direct, seemingly quiet and great fun in places. Then Snowdonia is one big special stage waiting to happen. After that... repeat in the opposite direction to get home (enough roads to choose an alternative route).

As mentioned above,
Head to North Wales, centred around Betws y Coed, plenty of B&B there or try Yr Hen Fecws B&B in Porthmadog which is excellent.
Brecon has some great roads but its nothing like as extensive as Snowdonia.
From where you are you're looking at 3-4 hours to get anywhere interesting and the Cotswolds are crowded, and nothing like as dramatic in scenic terms.

Agreed. I lived in the Cotswolds for 15 years and unless you get out at 5 pm on a Sunday the roads are rubbish (and even then they are not good). One of the main reasons I got out. Just too many people. Same with the Lakes... moved there and was a nightmare in summer.

Nice pubs in both locations mind smile
