Going to Sunderland with work on Thursday, starting in Glasgow. Forecast has canned the plans to take the Honda FireBlade, so as I imagine the trains will knock it on the head, I'll take the Impreza. Spent all that money on CrossClimate Sport 3 so let's see what they can do.

However, will the A68 be clear if the forecast snow comes? Or should I plan to go via Wooler and Coldstream? Take it Kielder will be well out?

If in doubt, expect a clear run. If it all kicks off, and particularly considering your transport of delight, you're in for an adventure.

I need a clear run as its a blooming early start on Thursday! Friday I have more flexibility to return!

We're heading to Kielder for a week's break on Saturday in a brand new (685 mile so far), front wheel drive car on Kumho Eco something or other tyres; what could possibly go wrong...?

With decent tyres you'll be fine. I remember one mini break we took at the much missed Tomintoul Hotel (near Ft William) in December when we had 4- 6 inches of fresh snow .We drove up to Kyle of Lochalsh and back withut drama in my wife's Focus TDCi on winters .

Thanks everyone. The A69 / M74 is a necessity, not a joy. As it's apparent the roads don't become impassable, unless really bad, drive appropriately, enjoy the view, have the necessary supplies in the car...and if I find a snowy car park, practice my drifting and handbrake turns

Ended up taking the A697, A68 and the A7 and on to Peebles. Biggest issue was near Newcastle Airport where the right hand lane of the dual carriageway hadn't been totally cleared...but otherwise OK.

That's the route we'll be taking later today to near Otterburn. Apart from early morning ice I was told yesterday that roads are clear (and supermarkets deliver to our Air BnB). Now we just need a week's clear/dry weather but it's not looking good irked

Good idea.

What could possibly go wrong?

It was warming up yesterday but didn't take any side roads. Many of those I saw will need a fair bit of time to melt...
