I'm up early on Saturday to px my car in Bristol. It'll be motorway all the way down so when I collect the new one I'm thinking of cutting through the Cotswolds.

Rather than getting on the M5 I'm thinking go on the M4 head to Cirencester, then possibly Burford to follow a little of Harry's Garage route. Then I'm unsure whether to head to Banbury and the M40 or carry on past and find a route to the M1 (I'm heading back to Yorkshire). Or head for the Fosse Way. I'm not tempted to go to Clarkson's pub or farm shop they are bound to be rammed on a sunny July Saturday.

Are there any other Cotswolds suggestions? Or ways to travel up and across the country?

Unfortunately, if I choose a scenic route I'll be there noon at the earliest so no chance of missing the crowds. Will it be more frustrating in a new car than enjoyable?

Opinions will vary.....but if it was me, and I'd driven 4 hours in the morning, I'd be looking for the quickest easiest route back in the afternoon. Then the next day, go for a drive somewhere local.

Fosse Way is pretty uninspiring and will be busy on a Saturday afternoon

M4 jct 18 then B4040 towards Malmesbury. Then A429 past Kemble Airfield and into Cirencester. B4425 to Burford going through Bibury. That's a nice fast flowing road.

Could stop of at Classic Motor Hub. Through Burford then Harry's route with the squirt up the hill.

Charlbury reminds me of an Italian hill top town. Then Banbury and motorway home.

Thank for the advice and tips.

Mostly stuck my original idea but with Master Bean tips, unfortunately the RHS Flower was on at Badminton and the signs seemed to directing show traffic that way. I did cut across to the B4040 just further north. Thankfully there wasn't much traffic and no holdups just a few minutes to get through Bibury due to a coach and maybe 5 minutes through Burford. Pretty much had the A361 to Banbury to myself as, by that point, I'd decided to head for the motorways and home after a 7am start and likely 5pm finish.

Sounds like you made the right call. You still managed to enjoy some proper Cotswolds roads without getting trapped in the worst of the Saturday tourist traffic, then took the sensible route home once tiredness started creeping in.

Only a few minutes through Bibury and Burford is a result for a sunny July weekend. The quieter A361 run to Banbury must also have been a nice way to get familiar with the new car before joining the motorway. Hope the car lived up to expectations!
