I’m collecting a new car from Bristol on Saturday and will be heading back to Yorkshire afterwards.

The quickest option is obviously the M5 and M42, but I’d quite like to enjoy the new car on some better roads rather than spending the whole journey on the motorway.

I’m considering heading towards Cirencester, then driving through Bibury, Burford and possibly across to Banbury before joining the M40. Another option is following part of the Fosse Way, although I’ve heard it can get very busy through places such as Stow-on-the-Wold on a sunny weekend.

I’ll probably leave Bristol around midday, so I know the popular Cotswolds roads and villages may already be crowded.

Are there any enjoyable roads, scenic routes or worthwhile stops between Bristol and Yorkshire that won’t add too many hours to the journey? Or would you just take the motorway home and save the proper drive for another day?

Whereabouts in Yorkshire?

I'm thinking M4 to J15, A419 north, pick up the A420, not a bad road and usually not stupidly busy, follow to the Oxford ring road, A34, A43, A5, pick up the M1 at J18. Should give you a decent A road run.

You won't have time for a tour of the Cotswolds on a Saturday. Avoid the A40 Iif you can.
