Drove through this part of the country yesterday after dying a slow death on the A36 behind the 35-42mph brigade. It really was a breath of fresh air. Deserted roads and some nice bends, but the most enticing thing were the tracks leading off into the plains where the tank crossings were. A sign informed me that civilian vehicles were not allowed on the plains, but whilst walking around up there I saw a group of dirt bikes buzz past me and a blue defender county that looked distinctly not military bimble past. Are these people just taking a chance or is it acceptable or is it possible they were service personnel out of uniform?

I also saw the mock village where they filmed the boxster-getting-shot-at bit in Top Gear .

Salisbury plain is a maze of green lanes and public by-ways. You have to liases with the range master, but they are brilliant lanes. The lads over on disco3.co.uk recently had an outing there

A trip across Salisbury Plain is my route to Castle Combe for every race weekend. Esepcially good at 6am in the morning, although you do have to dodge soldiers on occasion...

I used to have great fun playing around there in the TA. Imber, the shell village, is spooky to say the least after dark!

Some of the tracks are Byways so the usual laws apply.

As for the Top Gear Boxster piece.....That was actually filmed Here

This photo was taken before the village was built, but it is similiar to Imber but on Thetford training area. They filmed the piece prior to the village on a dissused airfield at Waton. Ah, pleasant memories of running around the training area in the dark, wind and rain beasting recruits.

sssh. dont tell anyone. i was trying to keep them a secret!

much filming/photography has gone on on the plain/wilts downs in general. evo are regulars - i'll never forget the zonda doing laps up and down outside my house all afternoon. anyone remember range rover sport on top gear?
as far as trail riding/4x4 goes: if you see a red flag at the tank crossing, go home, you might get shot/blown up. if not, er i'm not so sure anymore - we used to treat the plain as an extension of our back garden but post NERC, i think it's by-ways only im afraid. but there are plenty of them. any one got any definitive answers??

if you want to see imber/loads of spooky looking blown out tanks, make a visit at easter or new year. the whole plain is open for a few days at each. there is a spot from which there are absolutely no signs of human habitation other than the track you're riding along. a rare thing in this country i think you'll agree, and really rather refreshing.

can't wait to get back. but i'm currently residing in the middle of italian supercar country so it aint all bad.

I remeber Imber with mixed emotions - I was regular Army for 5 years - very hard work for CQB stuff but I loved the disciplin needed to do it properly - Yes, I did put it into practice - harrowing stuff.

I drive across salisbury plain twice a day, once to work and once home again.

I tell you i thank my lucky stars im still alive when i get home on a evening because you will see so many examples of dangerous and stupid driving. I do agree that its quite fun when there are not many cars along there but when its in the middle of winter and the fog is really thick and all you can see is...well jack all - it aint fun!!!

Though in the summer you do get to see all the army men dressed in the their gear with their big tanks!!!
