A road trip is "pick a destination and go with no plan" and a Driving Tour is "a pre planned route, with specific stops along the way" or at least thats how I would define the difference. For me a road trip conjures up images of young people piling into a banger and just going. Where as a driving tour conjures up images of morris minors or some other classic being driven by old people in the country.

Anybody else got deffinate ideas about which is which?

Most of the driving tours afiliated to or organised by people on PH tend not to be highly populated by old people in Morris Minors..

I've done a lot of driving tours and never experienced that. The most recent was last month when I did a trip through France to Monaco with a Bentley Continental T, Ferrari F430 Spider and a Dino.

Off the cuff 'road trips' are fine but planning a route to take in the best roads is also great fun.

In the PH sense,eg alpine touring, I would define a driving tour as a defined route with defined and booked hotels along route, whilst a road trip as a proposed route with defined special interest roads and hotels found along the way day by day to give greater flexability.
