Mazda RX8 race car - refresh and legalising for the road...
Discussion
Afternoon all,
After spending a very long time dipping in and out of this form and spending many an hour getting lost in people's projects the time has come to post something for myself..
First of all my name is Brook
While I am new here, some of you of may recognise the car/cars I'm planning on talking about if you follow the British Endurance Championship..
I'm the workshop manager at MacG Racing I'm Derby,
Our Technical Director, is activity campaigning our FD powered RX8 endurance race car this season, that car is still going from strength to strength, and with it completing at the level is is the specification is pretty full on, sequential air shift transmission, wider track, air jacks, everything you would expect of a race car at that level.
The car I'm going to be documenting actually pre-dates the above car, this is also a genuine race vehicle, but the sunroof shell meant when the turbo conversion idea was hatched this car remained on its current n/a spec and an alternative shell was sourced,
Our current plan is a refresh of the n/a car, plus making it road legal so we can enjoy a few evening and weekend meets, making it drivable on the road might also make track days at our local circuit a bit easier if we don't need the trailer...
And that's never a bad thing...

Brief run through of the current spec
Mazda Renesis 1.3 rotary, originally prepared by Rotary Revs, tuned and ported with upgraded ignition system, oil cooler mounted in the front bumper.
Lightweight flywheel and ceramic race clutch
Lightweight stainless steel race exhaust system, we will be add a cat for the MOT emissions test, and a silencer if required.
Lightweight polycarbonate windows with sliding openers.
120 litre fuel capacity, (Mazda tank plus an auxiliary tank in the boot)
Aero kit including front splitter, diffuser and carbon rear wing
AP Racing endurance spec brakes (thicker pads essentially)
Adjustable coilovers and upgraded bushes throughout,, custom anti roll bars and drop links.
Braid lightweight 17 x 8 wheels all round (square set up)
Full weld in cage
Fully stripped of all trim, heater system removed and direct blower fitted.
Doors stripped and gutted,
All required safety equipment, fire suppression system, FIA seats & harnesses etc.
I'll go through the refresh work as we carry out the work, but in terms of making this road legal we are looking at-
Emissions work (CAT & possibly play with the mapping slightly)
Less aggressive suspension set up, we'll redo all the suspension geometry, lift the ride height and give it a little more neutral set up.
Indicators (wiring and hazard switch removed so they'll be some wiring work here)
Horn (as above) and turn the rain light back into a rear fog lamp
Set of road legal tyres
Refit handbrake aystem
Number of sharp edges to trim and mesh to install in wing & bonnet vents
As it's new role will leave it a little more vulnerable we'll also be installing a tracker (Scorpion or Autotrac, we're dealers/installers for both, so we'll pick which when we get to that point)
