With the current A4 Avant having served Mrs89 well as a great allrounder... mechanically she's been without fault and has proved her worth. Exterior wise, she has suffered and looks great from 10 feet away but there's a complaint on every panel... the nail in the coffin was a side swipe from an errant deer (it didn't end well for the deer) the time has come to say farewell....

Wanting something bigger as her car is the family wagon as we all can't fit in the S5...

This arrives Saturday morning

it's a 2010, 3.0TDi, so the substantially cheaper tax bracket...

needs tyres (ordered a set of Nankangs)
ordered new number plates as because i always do with new cars and a set of interior mats as the current ones are to awful...

Cosmetically all she needs is a new plastic arch extension...

after that it's a case of whatever is going to rear it's head...

should be fun...!!!

I'm in for the ride, I did the same for my wife after her Tiguan got written off and bought a similar vintage Touareg 3.0 tdi. The Q7 looks smart, I spent 1000 or so miles behind the wheel of my bosses old 2008 V8 4.2tdi and was surprised at how much they drive like a normal car and not a wallowy SUV. I'm sure she'll be over the moon!

Ive got this engine in a q5, its cost a small fortune but I cannot spanner myself. Had all the work in the V done to stop a coolant leak.

There's always something great about "new car day"...

i'm glad to report that's the Beast arrived and looks extremely presentable... it's not 2 cars welded together and the test drive and VCDS interrogation all went as i hope. Cam chain stretch was looked at and all well within acceptable limits.
The only fault which came up was on the HVAC and an air quality sensor... i'll take that.

exterior wise, there's a couple of small marks on the bumpers which will be sorted, there's got to be some benefits to having access to a spray booth at work...!!!

all 4 wheels have a little kerb rash, but again i'll sort as i've got new tyres on route

the interior is immaculate, except one of the arm rests has a nick on it but doesn't detract. The steering wheel and gear selector are awfully shiny so they need a deep clean and treatment to get that matt finish they should have.
But OMG whoever choose the floor mats needs their eyes testing, they're going in the bin as i've ordered new OE mats.

Off out to see what i can code with VCDS then...!!!

apparently you can reprogramme the gearbox to have the same shift characteristics as the Porsche Cayenne...?

You old romantic! Park it on the street, wrap the key up as a present and let her find it for maximum brownie points!

Haha, true. Where you see adventure, I see breakdowns and expensive faults. We're all different!

that's where the expense lies sadly, i'm lucky in that i spanner everything myself, the parts are the cheap bit... with regular maintenance the 3.0tdi is a robust engine, i'll find out how "regular" she's been maintained by the previous owners... thankfully she shows no signs of any leaks.

they are hideous and made me gag on the images in the for sale add. I can't wait to see what SWMBO has to say about them...

well and hour in we have a non shiny steering wheel

drivers lower seat bolster had lost its colour

a quick treatment of Colourlock black

i'll do them again, but i wanted a quick impact

and a very quick polish of the black pillar trims, before on the left etc...

and a quick recoding of various modules...

so far i've tweaked

instrument gauge needle sweep has been activated
alarm beep on locking
coming/leaving home lights activated
and coded the gearbox to have the Cayenne shift
oh and the lap timer, as i'm sure she'll want to race to the shops and work...!!! see if she can get her lap times down...

Wow, fast work OP. Hope the car goes well for you.

Can I ask what products you used on the steering wheel and black trim between the windows? I need to both jobs on my Bork Factor 9 Dadmobile

the steering wheel was a little bit of TFR and a toothbrush to get into the perforated leather bits, but i did go all over the whole wheel, just do a section at a time, dry with a clean microfibre.
Then a liberal wiping with DrLeather wipes and then dry with another clean microfibre until dry, i did this twice as the wipes were still pulling dirt out. Follow the manufacturers instructions on these.
Then just leave it to fully air dry. It results in a perfect, as factory fresh matt finish... with constant use the oil and grease from your hands will make the wheel shiny again. I clean my leather wheels regularly with the DrLeather wipes.
The drying with the microfibres will pull a lot of the dirt out, the wetting part loosens the dirt, if that makes sense? when drying always use a new part of the microfibre, to save working the previously removed crud.
The black trim was nothing more than Farcela G3 cutting compound, yet another clean microfibre and apply like you would if you were removing swirl marks from your paint.
With yet another clean microfibre buff off. Then apply a finishing wax of your choice.
If you have small enough applicator pads you can machine polish.

For those concerned about my wellbeing…. I didn’t get murdered.
Once the shock wore off there was joy and a million questions….
Only comment was “it’s a bit big…!!!”
