Car recorded as Cat N by error.
Discussion
Hi can anyone help me! I’ve had my car 15 years and want to sell it. I’ve discovered it has a cat N write off against it, from 13 years ago. This is incorrect, it’s never been written off! I can’t remember who I was insured with at the time and have no idea where to begin to sort out this mess. Please can anyone help me 🙏
Had this recently when I went to sell my MIL's ageing Peugeot to WBAC. A car park ding many years ago which had been reported to the insurer but they chose to get repaired themselves ended up with a write-off marker against the car. I just shrugged my shoulders and took the £180 as the car just needed to go.
If it's a high-value car, you know who your insurer was at the time and have records of your dealings with the insurance company and what happened to your car then you might be in with a chance of resolving it.
How much is the car worth with / without the CAT N marker, and how are you trying to sell it (WBAC, trade, or privately?).

I would ask for information held about you from the motor insurance bureau, that may have details of old policies.
They're where I would start in any case for a direction on what you could do to resolve.

I've seen this happen when a car was repaired. The body shop quoted X, the insurer said "write off". The body shop said "if we do it for X-10% can we have the work and you not write it off?" "Yes".It was still recorded as a write-off and the owner had to get the insurer to take the marker off. Which they did in about five minutes.
But she obviously knew who the insurer was.
